I’ve said it before but reading all the medieval history books I’ve been reading lately has been so comforting. Makes you realize that there have always been mad and incompetent kings and they almost always die in ignominy and everyone piles shit on them for centuries after they’re gone.

Red Wine + Screenwriting

I don't have any advice, I'm just at my computer and working on a scene and thought I'd say how darn happy I am to know so many of you in the #Scriptsky community.

A lot of us met over on Twitter, and it's been a feat to rebuild/reconnect here. But I'm glad we have. 🧵

Now more than ever, writing and art is an act of courage.
When the fragility of a public that fears being challenged, fears rigorous conversation, fears having assumptions and prejudice challenged, becomes a barrier, it takes courage to create.

Writing an epic fantasy New Adult novel that explores taboos, I wonder about the balance of representation; it feels like there are so many rules to earn the diversity tick, or the politically correct tick, writing can turn into the wrong kind of labour, trying to not get cancelled vs art. Thoughts?

Stop using AI.

Yes, even just for fun.

AI is built on STOLEN images and text.

That’s right: by using it, you’re stealing from your friends. There is NOT ethical generative AI.

Bonus bullshit: it is HORRENOUS for the environment.

(Yes, even the cutesy profile photo cartoon things.)

Teaching another community class on writing next Saturday. The beat sheet and writing a scene.

Often the attendees are vulnerable people in the community who just need to feel seen and heard, so writing becomes a safe way to process their realities.

We went from “what good are the humanities?” to “suddenly, no one can read” in about a year, and the answer to the first question is the disinformation and lack of critical thinking you see all around you. *That* is why you need the humanities. This is what they prevent.

It is critical that all young people read and write. Literacy is a human right and a survival opportunity.
I loved teaching the community writers’ workshop in my town; doing it for free meant that there was no cost barrier.

Lovely to see writers play with tools that help create flow in their process. They were buzzing with excitement.
