Never forget that Norman Rockwell, debatably the most famous American artist to ever put brush to canvas, was not afraid to show the ugliness along with the good. Having his work/reputation sanitized and trimmed into marketable nostalgia is about American as it gets.

Hi, this is all super helpful already. I had already encountered the Kennan text for free online, but alas, its focus on religious crimes is less helpful to me than I'd like given what I'm trying to research. (TLDR, it coincides with queer history.)
