One of the most incredible shots I've ever gotten, in Yellowstone. This coyote walked over a ridge in the blowing snow and posed for me, with a small grin on its face, the snowfalkes like stars in the background.

The desolation and beauty of life and nature is grounding, and so good for the soul.

On "fair" reporting and what happened at "60 Minutes"
Laura Belin: I was alarmed (though not surprised) when CBS News boss Bari Weiss intervened to stop “60 Minutes” from airing a segment.

As we started connecting the dots, we realized that some of us were sent to the same person in Hollywood for movie auditions. Some of us went to the same modeling agency…

Remember who was sitting right behind Donald Trump on his Inauguration Day? The richest man in the world, the tech billionaire tycoons, and his billionaire cabinet. He’s certainly delivering his “golden age” for them, but it’s crumbs for everyone else. That’s the Trump economy.
Trump's 'Golden Age' has arrived for the top 10%
The robust GDP numbers reported this week mask the extent to which wealthy Americans are driving growth.

From 2018 to 2024, the tax rate paid by eight major retailers was slashed from 30% to just 17.5%.

The CEOs of those major retailers were paid a collective $1.3 billion.

Meanwhile, the average worker at those stores was paid less than $32,000 in 2024.

Nothing trickled down.

A definitional element of extremism is that harming an out-group is inseparable from the success or survival of the in-group. For extremists, such harm becomes an intrinsic need. They come to believe that denying them the right to harm out-groups is the same thing as denying them the right to exist.
The right, along the Roberts Court, is trying to nullify the Reconstruction amendments guaranteeing equality under the law, in order to restore the Antebellum Constitution, which envisions “liberty” as an eternal aristocracy of race and class (gift link) www.theatlantic.com/politics/202...

Here's a letter HHS sent canceling one of the grants, relating to work on birth defects. Canceled because the project "emphasizes equity, diversity, and inclusion as key foundational components"

Here is a map of the affected countries (excluding Tonga), to give you a sense of how much this new ban restricts immigration from Africa in particular.

Of the newly-added country, Nigeria faces the largest impact, with tens of thousands of visas issued every year to Nigerians.

It's not that "no one was ready" it's that literacy efforts don't get funded, fact-checking is now "censorship", grants got killed, taxing companies to mitigate social impact =nonstarter in the US, politicians focused on the wrong things. Trust & social norm breakdown the are major non-tech issues.

Not only did the U.S. not stop it, it gave unchecked power -twice-to the movement that feeds Alex Jones, who was found liable for terrorizing Sandy Hook families with his lies. Rather than Jones feel the pain of his $1billion restitution judgment, his mass propaganda business is instead validated.
13th anniversary of horrific shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary.

I recall thinking then that when a shooter killed 26, 20 of them 6- and 7-yr olds that FINALLY we'd do something about scourge of gun violence that uniquely afflicts U.S.

But gun lobby & weak politicians prevents it

The minute Jasmine Crockett, a fierce fighter against fascism, announced her run for the Senate, the never-Kamala trolls came out in force.

Never that same heat for Trump, who wants to export Palestinians from Gaza and turn it into a resort. Literally ethnic cleansing.
