We are really going to have to grapple with the fact that publishing on the whole did not pivot well to a business model where they are trying to sell books directly to consumers, and outsourcing that duty to authors was always mostly impossible, but now it's increasingly completely impossible.

In all seriousness, publishers are going to have to figure out how to market books in the post-social-media landscape. That should be an implicit part of their job. What authors/artists can do on their own is increasingly limited and siloed.
