Hello Bluesky! Quick #introduction: I'm a composer from Edinburgh, writing mainly choral music. I also run choirsforclimate.com, which has loads of resources for choirs on it and music from over 50 composers - if you know a choir that wants to make the world a better place, come and browse.

In celebration of World Octopus Day, we wanted to revisit one of our favorite cephalopod sightings, the glass octopus — Vitreledonella richardi filmed during a month-long #PhoenixIslandsCoral expedition in 2021.

Hamburgers were never made with ham - they're named after the city of Hamburg! There is no reason for them to be made from meat!

For the uninitiated: The pope being this direct and explicit to U.S. bishops about how to respond to a domestic policy happening in real time is…unusual.

Pope Leo told U.S. bishops visiting him at the Vatican on Wednesday that they should firmly address how immigrants are being treated by President Donald Trump's hardline policies, attendees said, in the latest push by the pontiff on the issue. For @reuters.com:

At least they're admitting the Green Party was, in fact, founded on sound environmental ideas?
hutchingsmusic.bsky.social
And they don't even know the difference between principals and principles... yet they call themselves journalists?

worse than anything Spotify's ever done (OK, maybe not, but still pretty bad)

I'm somewhat relieved to see the Commisison originally proposed to ban "only 'bacon' and names of animals and their parts". However, an amendment calling for bans on "'steak', 'escalope', 'sausage', 'burger', 'hamburger', 'egg yolk', and 'egg white'" seems to have passed after that.
hutchingsmusic.bsky.social
Banning "burger" for vegetarian food would be particularly ridiculous, given that the word "hamburger" comes from the city of Hamburg in Germany (not from the meat) and therefore linguistically it just means "from a city".
hutchingsmusic.bsky.social
"Renew’s Barry Cowen (Ireland) failed to secure enough support for a softer alternative that would only ban names “explicitly tied” to animals, such as “beef”, “chicken” and “hamburger”."

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

We built about the same number of nuclear reactors per capita, then (UK has about 1/20 the population of China, which seems like an important relevant point here)

Make it into a game, slip in a few really weird but unlikely true facts and whoever spots the true ones gets a prize. You'll make a mint.

It's still run by Nazi-adjacent people and people should be getting off there ASAP. But it is hard to do when that puts a big chunk of the writer's livelihood at risk.

as I understand it, the newsletter is the easy bit but payments are the difficult bit - and Substack is probably a lot more difficult to take down payments from than, say, the recent requests from payment processors that have resulted in itch.io having to take down all slightly risqué games.

(P.S. replacing Nazis with a minority sounds great in general)

Good that renewables are rising - but if you've ever asked yourself "are renewables replacing fossil fuel or just meeting added demand so far?" this chart provides the clearest answer I've ever seen. Everything except renewables is basically constant. Hopefully we'll see fossil decline soon.

It's a pretty big deal that the NYC Bar Association--one of the most prominent and respected bar associations in the country--is accusing the President of ordering the "unlawful summary execution," i.e. murder--of civilians in violation of US and international law. www.nycbar.org/press-releas...

⚡ Europe’s clean energy transition can only move as fast as its electricity grids.

But outdated regulation and limited oversight are slowing things down. RAP and @beyondfossilfuels.bsky.social propose two urgent reforms for national governments to make grids fit for the energy transition.👇

Worldwide impact of inhalers equivalent to half a million cars.

Number of cars in the world: 1.6 BILLION.

Impact of all inhalers combined is 1/3200 the impact of all cars combined.

THAT'S NOT SIGNIFICANT and @cnn.com (the parent company here) needs to get this headline changed ASAP.
