It nags at me that people are dancing around the fact that one reason centre-right think-tanks are in an intellectual crisis moment is because we've spent over a decade where lots of their ideas were tried out and didn't pan out as advertised.

In future Britain will be a poorer country with fewer taxpayers & more older people dependent on more expensive healthcare in need of more immigration. Climate change will displace millions. Yet, 2 mainstream parties are already proposing detention camps & mass deportations. Bleak.

Just noticed the Conservatives’ British ICE proposal also involves using mass deployment of facial ID – still an unproven and unreliable technology that particularly struggles with non-white faces – to enable deportations.

Which would inevitably mean false positives leading to detention of citizens

Hard agree. There’s no route to growth. Proceeds from fossil fuel capitalism have all gone top to 1% who don’t invest & spend on self interest. AI = absence of genuine solutions. Effects of climate change barely begun. When they bite people will move. Elites turning racist in response to a trickle.
