Just a thing about this: a common statement in writing is that you can fix crap, but you can't fix a blank page.

I have heard AI apologists claim that this is why it's fine to generate a first draft.

Now, to be clear, fuck this.

But also: an AI draft is a fucking blank page.
I know I don’t talk about writing much. It is because I am writing so slowly.

But I want you to know that I am taking a part of this story that absolutely sucked and took me months to produce four of the worst chapters I have ever written and in the edit I figured out how to fix it.

Social Security is not a Ponzi scheme. It’s a high-functioning, universal, and exceptionally efficient part of the American social safety net.

Zoom out and you’ll see the biggest Ponzi scheme of them all — the entire Trump 2 regime. https://robertreich.substack.com/p/the-biggest-ponzi-scheme-of-all

If my anxiety about current affairs can be measured in baked goods, yesterday was a doozy: 3 dozen garlic-asiago dinner rolls from scratch, 2 dozen chocolate chip cookies, and a batch of poolish (a pre-ferment of flour/water/yeast) to sit out overnight for the baguettes I'm baking this morning.

Raising chickens is more expensive than grocery store eggs, but also, bird flu is endemic in wildlife at the moment.

Asking people to do this with zero safety precautions or knowledge is a great way to get more people infected and raise the chance that we get a human transmissible version.
Trump’s Sec of Agriculture Brooke Rollins says the solution to high egg prices for Americans is to get some chickens and raise them in your backyard.

How can we who value community, compassion & human rights congregate in the same areas? Even red states have blue pockets; even blue states could turn bluer. A better statistician than me could probably identify places with a favorable ratio of blue voters, employment opportunities & cost of living.

This isn't a spending cut, it's mass murder.

This. The proposed Republican budget would take a machete to the safety net for millions of the most vulnerable Americans.
Congress voting to gut Medicaid will kill Americans and create untold suffering. Moms + babies. Grandmas in memory care. Disabled folks. The GOP has blood on their hands. Congress is now enacting a genocide on its poorest and most vulnerable. This is eugenics in action.

I am continually reminding myself of - and being comforted by - the fact that in these dark times, new voices will rise up, new solutions will be created, new pathways for justice will be created. This is when we get to show up with our ingenuity, our tenacity, our humanity.

REMINDER #4

4. Don’t grade on a curve

Do not hold Republicans to a lower standard and do not hold Democrats to a higher one. When a Republican does something normal, recognize it is normal not exceptional. When a Democrat does something normal, recognize it is normal and not terrible.

Yes—private corporations😳

This is Project 2025. This is fascism. This will get worse.

YES. Being in the minority means Dems can’t block Trump’s noms. But they can DELAY & use every extra moment to tell the public why noms like Patel are so dangerous to our democracy.

That’s what activists have been demanding & it's what Judiciary Cmte Dems did today. www.politico.com/live-updates...
Committee punts on Kash Patel vote as Democrats keep up the pressure
It's not unusual for the Senate Judiciary Committee to delay votes a week, but Democrats made a show of it in opposition to President Donald Trump's pick to lead the FBI.

Speaking of your most private data, it's a good idea to print & download your Social Security earnings report. NOW would be a very good time to do so. It shows your lifetime earnings history and SS contributions.

You can also call the SSA to request a report by mail.

With the Muskrat team pawing through our most sensitive data, I'm seeing recommendations to put a freeze on your credit with all three credit agencies. Unlike a lock, a freeze is free and easy to temporarily un-do if you need to allow a credit check (i.e. for a new credit card or loan application).
