Sometimes when I'm struggling up a hill and I hear the telltale coasting freewheel of a deliverista about to pass me, I think of them as "cheaters." But the bicycle is such an efficient machine that runners probably think I'm cheating. Avoiding suffering isn't cheating!!

Took the High Bridge home after the Tour de Bronx. I can't see this without shaking my fist and cursing Robert Moses #bikenyc
A silver and white bicycle leaned up against a fence. Three or four highways are visible in the background, overlapping and intertwined.

I just got home from a bad ride and it's so hard to maintain a positive mindset some days. Was recounting the bad thing that happened to my partner and had to explain the 4 other bad things in the preceding 20 minutes/4 mi that led to my poor decision

Three city council committees convened today to question the Adams admin about a citywide response to Trump’s cuts to housing, Medicaid, and more. The Adams admin didn’t even bother to show up.

Did ~2200 ft of #bikenyc climbs without leaving the city
Screenshot showing the route through upper Manhattan and the Bronx Screenshot showing the elevation profile of the route A silver and white bike with pink accents leaned against a stone wall. The city, as seen from the top of a hill, stretches far into the distant horizon The intersection of 187th St and Overlook terrace. 187th here is a steep set of stairs

Getting crosstown below Houston was a pain yesterday with Grand and Spring closed for San Gennaro and Prince closed at Bowery; the sooner we get a two-way #bikenyc route on Canal the better. - nyc.streetsblog.org/2025/09/12/d...
A photo taken in the middle of the Prince and Bowery intersection. The roadway is torn up and covered with steel plates. Construction workers have closed off Prince Street and are actively working. An SUV is in the crosswalk.

Nobody freak out! the reason is in the last paragraph -- JSK 2.0. this is a win for #bikenyc
Mr. Mamdani would be the youngest mayor to lead the city in a century, and has said that he intends to try to hire an ideologically diverse array of experts to work for him, if elected.

In an unrelated interview with The Times on Thursday, he declined to name who he planned to bring into his administration but said he had met with a range of former City Hall officials, including Janette Sadik- Khan, a transportation commissioner under Mr. Bloomberg.

I don't really care if the future is short videos. I like words. Words have gotten me this far and I'm gonna stick with 'em for the duration

Throwback #bikenyc pic from 2010. This would be a great place to hold a war crimes trial. It's just steps from the site of the US Open where I'm told a war criminal is in attendance rn
wide shot of the interior of the new York State pavilion in flushing meadow Park. The structure has no roof. Towers and UFO-like circular platforms are visible through the open top, a tree with bare branches is visible in the background. The effect is a cold winter day in a retro-futuristic ruin. A bicycle, dwarfed by the towers behind it, leans against a wall in the lower right. A closer view of the bicycle from the previous shot. The decay of the structure is more apparent. Random cinder blocks are strewn about, red paint flakes off the wall, with large patches of rust visible.

Reposting this with alt text, because this deserves to be shared more widely.
A comic by Jo French (@gothinkdexign) made up of six colored panels arrayed in two rows of three. The scenes from different Star Trek series depict Captain Picard meeting with the Temarian captain in Darmok, a group of Bajoran freedom fighters celebrating their victory while a shadow of a Cardassian looms above, the Emergency Medical Hologram on-board the prototype USS Prometheus in battle with Romulans, Geordi drinking with Data in Ten Forward, Major Kira talking with Odo, and Captain Janeway greeting Seven of Nine as she awakens from her regeneration cycle. The text reads "Star Trek teaches us that there are many ways to change the world. You can do it by building bridges, or by continuing to fight, even when all seems hopeless, or my stepping up to a task you weren't prepared for... But sometimes, all you need to do to change the world is to just look someone in the eye, and tell them 'Hello.' 'I see you.' 'I know there's a person in there.'"

It occurred to me on tonight's commute (5th in a row where someone couldn't make it up the steep curb cut on the Manhattan willyb approach) that I'm living through the #bikenyc version of the Eternal September

Jerry Nadler’s pick for Congress, Micah Lasher, has been one of the city’s biggest deniers of and cheerleaders for genocide.

He’s been arguing for free speech crackdowns on pro-Palestinian speech while tens of thousands are slaughtered in Gaza.

The bike infrastructure in NYC is good enough that I can plot routes that minimize my interactions with cars. I cannot do the same for ebikes. I have a bad interaction with citibike riders just about every ride and I'm having a lot less fun on the bike these last couple years
hyf.bsky.social
The best case scenario seems to be that ebikes take over, we have fewer cars on the road, and people who ride traditional bikes are just in the way (basically how it was before JSK). It'd be good for society but it would make me sad.
