Housing is too expensive to build and too expensive to afford.

Donald Trump's solution? Make it even MORE expensive with his chaotic tariffs.

Americans can't afford Donald Trump's housing market.

We have two EVs. Currently my wife charges them at work at a rate of (for our commutes/typical driving) 17 cents for every 4.5 miles. For a 30 mpg car, this comes out to about $1.13 per gallon of gas equivalent.

we charge our hyundai ioniq 5 around once every two to three weeks at a muncipal charger and i’d say it runs about $9 for 250 miles of range.

i’m actually ok with the “Greater Idaho” plan.

I’d split NorCal (“Jefferson”) in two vertically - coastal Humboldt / Mendocino is very different from inland Modoc / Lassen - but that’s pretty tiny.

This is the most accurate depiction of the Midwest to date. Wichita has always felt like the last Midwest city while also being the first plains city.

Very kind words about "The Unfinished Metropolis" from one of the leading transit professionals in the US.

Thank you, Jeff!

Book review: As a journalist, @benschneider.bsky.social uses everyday language to unpack the complex, nerdy worlds of housing, transportation and other urban policy. He shows why American cities failed to serve today’s needs – and how to catch up. Perfect as a main text in an Intro to Urbanism class

American cities have stagnated. Residential neighborhoods, transportation systems, and commercial districts have changed little in 50+ years.

My new book, "The Unfinished Metropolis," explores how that happened — and how to fix it.

Good analogy for what the US is doing with solar.
seancasten.bsky.social
As I noted earlier this week, it is as if we invented the cell phone, exported it and then spent the next 30 years taking photo ops with rotary phone workers, subsidizing their product and telling people on cell networks that they're too woke. We're playing catch up now. BUT...

This is remarkable. The world added more solar and wind capacity in 2024 than we added demand. 100% of demand growth PLUS 9% to retire dirtier sources. Cheap energy keeps winning. ember-energy.org/latest-insig...

We have got to do something about electricity rates in California.

$11 billion to raise and widen a highway, through a wetland, during a climate crisis.

Imagine spending $11 billion on workforce housing in Marin/Sonoma/Napa/San Francisco so the people driving across 37 every day to get to work ... could just live where they work.

California is a climate pariah.

The entire proposed Highway 37 Solano-Marin super bridge is estimated to cost $11 billion, all to replace an existing road between a couple of suburbs. And it's proposed at 114 feet wide.

For comparison, the Golden Gate Bridge is 90 feet wide.

Caltrans has released a cross section for the ultimate (raised viaduct) version of SR-37.

Now maybe I'm just being paranoid, but if you were building a road that you planned to keep at 4 lanes wide, I don't think it would look like this.

Streets are still closed off in front of the Portland ICE facility at 8:30pm. Protesters have gathered on a side street. Dance party in progress.

I had a similar feeling about my grandmother telling me about watching the Klan march through town as a kid and, uh, well I’m glad she isn’t here to see what we’ve done
beijingpalmer.bsky.social
honestly it's constantly jarring to me that I, as a child, knew several WWI veterans, including my great-grandfather. Soon WW2 will seem just as vanished in time.

Columbus City Schools may have to stop bussing high school students entirely because Ohio law requires public school districts to prioritize bussing for charter and private school students - and the state is already fining Columbus more than $10 million/year for not complying enough

Columbus City Schools Board of Education has voted to remove a requirement that the district provide busing for high schoolers as a potential cost-saving move amid district financial challenges.

Always been a big fan of Allan Servoss’s weird illustrations for the 1975 Arkham House edition of Gary Myers’ “The House of the Worm”. Just learned Servoss passed away (1947-2024) after a long career as an art teacher and landscape painter who occasionally drew monsters. RIP.

Honestly for a settler-colonialist, not a bad guy.

I didn’t expect to find that Thomas Pynchon’s patrilineal ancestor is the reason that the upper Connecticut River is in Massachusetts, and that the reason is because Connecticut was too mean to the Native Americans.

Anyway I guess this is a better approach than orthodox Puritanism.
