This is true for writing, too -- the process is where you often figure out that some of the ideas you started with aren't quite workable, and you grind at them until they become something better.
Not needing to justify hiring camera crews, actors, and production personnel meant the agency could just hand off their half-baked idea to a studio with instructions to make it all happen. The point where your concept hits reality is where you need to make intentional choices. AI removes that step/3

yep — which also explains the appeal of the robots doing creative work to some people. they just want very desperately to be famous.
i think a (perhaps underappreciated) aspect of this whole situation is the extent to which every elite profession is filled with people who excel at drawing attention and want to be famous more than they want to do the actual job
December 11, 2025 at 3:50 PM
hi yes it’s me lol

i just liiike straight up forget to post on socials oops
Tangentially: "Drawing attention" has become an ENORMOUS built-in part of working in creative fields, and people who can do that effectively start out waaaaay ahead of people who are actually good at doing the job itself well. (Sometimes people can do both, of course!)

I did not know that Rainbow Sandals were started by a garage tinkerer, and man, there is a fun book for someone (not it!) to write about all the garage tinkerers from the 1960s who created brands in the outdoor space. There are so many and they're all such colorful characters.

And yes, huge romance fan omg. I am in awe of the writers who can make this genre sing.
December 10, 2025 at 5:49 PM
This is such a good explainer of romance as a genre. It has so many rules that in the hands of a talented writer can turn into something pretty special. Also, ngl I wish the gay hockey thing was available in book form.
Buckle in, we’re doing Romance 101 - Heated Rivalry edition. This is for all the folks showing their ignorance about what Heated Rivalry is doing. Note: Very little of this is my original thoughts. These things are Known.

a sign of just how fucked search is now, i went to find a story i wrote and the AI summary described the story in that weird stilted AI way, but google failed to produce a link to the story ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yah, it is incredibly satisfying as a relatively small donor to donate to the local foodbank. like even my puny donations are feeding people which is fucking awesome.
i’ll never forget when i found out how far food banks can stretch money i was like well this is dumb i should just give them a bunch of money and i felt like mansa musa throwing out gold on his hajj.
will never ever chide people for doing food drives because you care and i love you for that but as always i gently, very gently remind people that one can of beans costs one can of beans and that same dollar is six cans of beans to a food bank.

money. give them money. if the spirit moves you.

I was talking to the editor of a print quarterly that I wanted to pitch and the first two issues for next year are already full. It, uh, did not used to work that way. So, it's going super good, is what I'm saying.

Hi, this is my inbox where hope goes to die
Everyone pleased with their Inbox 0 wilts in the face of my Inbox 30K.

Newsletters are not good for me.
PLEASE. I miss so much due to being really bad at reading email. My inbox sucks! Please make blogs with many good writers together. I will give money for this!
December 9, 2025 at 2:25 AM
It is unfortunate that newsletters are like the only thing now because I am bad at them as both a reader and a writer. Please can we have a new thing.

there is a great deal in this story that's about an photo exhibit at the Whitney and all kinds of other things, besides. Recommend.
