Now that everyone knows who Trump-protecting Bari Weiss is, let's recall that Vancouver Coastal Health's Head of Comms, Deana Lancaster, was RT'ing Bari Weiss not long ago

Alberta renters have it bad. Part of the reason is the dismal amount of non-market housing options available in this province.

In my latest story for @ricochetmedia.bsky.social i write about the limitations of Build Canada Homes’ approach to non-market housing.

Alberta renters don’t need more ‘supply’ — they need non-market housing options
Governments keep chasing the market while community housing providers quietly deliver stable, affordable homes that won’t disappear when profits rise

furthermore, puberty blockers have decades of safety data in young children, and are near identical to the body's own GnRH peptide (as opposed to a synthetic small molecule of some kind)
...it's *easy* to imagine how horrific it might be if you, or perhaps your child, were forced to endure an unwanted puberty, one that contradicts your fundamental understanding of yourself. if you can't apply this to trans kids' realities you're a f-ing monster juliaserano.medium.com/the-cass-rev...

Around 260 people spoke against Vancouver city council’s plan to carry out the “Downtown Eastside Implementation Strategy” motion, which reduces social housing in new buildings.

Despite that strong opposition, council passed the new plan on Tuesday evening.

BC politics is answering the question "what would happen if we recruited some of the worst people we can find to be in a party that is 100% based on performative outrage and bigotry - do you think they might all get along without forming ever-smaller splinter groups?"
Watching a party of two wage an internecine war - it's a war so miniature and condensed it's just hilarious

okay, you can keep the notwithstanding clause i guess, but there should be a rule that if you have to use it three times, there will be an immediate election called

if you gotta use the notwithstanding clause, you’re not doing the will of the people

Worse, they did this without advance notice to many people waiting to speak to them about their ridiculous plan to turn the DEOD area into towers and to gut existing (and weak) protections for the city's most impoverished residents. Just cleared the room to go party.
So, last night the ruling ABC Vancouver party and mayor cut short a crucial public hearing by 4 hours so they could attend the Christmas party of the real estate developers' assn (UDI).

There was a motion to keep the hearing going, but they voted it down. #vanpoli. #vanre

The NWC has been a ticking timebomb in the Canadian constitution, and it's going off.

This is, far and way, the #1 thing I'm worried about with Canada moving forward; I don't see an easy way out of this for the country if conservative Premiers jam the NWC button every time they attack trans people.

I could be wrong (I frequently am) but most people who call out racism, transphobia, ableism, and other prejudices, at least in my experience, aren't trying to cancel anyone.

They're asking for accountability. They want us to own our errors and be humble about them. And that's reasonable.

Hannah Arendt died fifty years ago today, on December 4, 1975.

Her legacy - one of documenting, exposing, and combatting totalitarianism, one of making sure “never again” truly means “never again” - is one I hope we can continue to uphold.
