Invalid answers do not invalidate the questions asked! The rise of MAGA with its attendant resentment, xenophobia, incompetence, and vandalism may distract us from the social questions in play, but degenerative, fascist answers make the questions even more pressing. 🧵

Reports and videos show ICE agents asking American citizens whether they’ve “learned their lesson over the last few days” are deeply troubling. Language like this implies intent and raises serious questions about premeditation and mindset on the scene.

Editorial in the National Catholic Reporter: "The vice president's comments justifying the death of Renee Good are a moral stain on the collective witness of our Catholic faith. His repeated attempts to blame Good for her own death are fundamentally incompatible with the Gospel."
Catholic Vice President Vance takes to social media to justify killing of Renee Good
After the tragic shooting of Renee Good at the hands of ICE, the Catholic vice president of the United States took to social media to justify the killing.

It seems notable that Trump, in the midst of describing invading Caracas, decided to riff on invading U.S. cities. He rightly, tellingly associates those two things.

MADURO CAPTURED: Great!

But capturing Maduro without decpaitating the regime just leads to a power struggle that could leave the country in civil war or parts under control of criminal gangs. It depends on the people and/or if the army backs whoever suceeds Maduro

Having seized another sovereign country, we now need to recognize every Venezuelan as a U.S. national. After all, we will be “running the country.” If Venezuela is a protectorate, then its people are subjects of the United States.
It’s not about drugs. If it was, Trump wouldn’t have pardoned one of the largest narco traffickers in the world last month.

It’s about oil and regime change.

And they need a trial now to pretend that it isn’t. Especially to distract from his sinking under Epstein and skyrocketing healthcare costs.

This is the best response to our latest Presidential adventure.
It's an old and obvious pattern. An unpopular president - failing on the economy and losing his grip on power at home - decides to launch a war for regime change abroad.

The American people don’t want to “run” a foreign country while our leaders fail to improve life in this one.

DOJ can't even manage the Maduro docket competently but I'm sure all else will go swimmingly.

seattle: let's take 20 years to allow ADUs and duplexes in backyards

berlin: our ADUs are 6 story mixed use buildings, have been legal since 1862
If we are the city we say we are, we should legalize this at least within 1/2 a mile of every bus stop in the UZO. Stunning.

Listened to Brent on the latest urbanist agenda pod and really liked his "it's just geometry" argument about getting cars off of roads. This is a good visualisation of that:
What does it take to move 1000 people? Smart infrastructure supporting choices that don’t take up so much space (or produce so much emissions/pollution, cost so much public money etc).

Mobility in cities is about space.

In my life I’ve seen my country be glorified, vilified, lionized, demonized, and ignored by other countries, but now I’ve lived long enough to see the United States be pitied by other countries. Christ on a crutch.
The world alternates between laughing and crying. Neither in a good way.

Give the gift of reading this Christmas. Purchase (at least) five big books of the same edition—all identical. Give them to your four best friends and keep one for yourself. Finally, google “book code”. In this manner you may prepare for the chilly winter years ahead.
