1/12 A very special moment for me! 🎉

My first paper as corresponding author—a @jcb.org Perspective on how contact-based decision-making in collective cell migration can itself encode blueprints for complex patterns and shapes.

Branching morphogenesis is fundamental to animal development, shaping complex organs like lungs, kidneys, and vascular networks. Gills are another highly branched organ. Yet, the developmental processes behind gill formation in zebrafish remain poorly understood.

2/4 I chose this picture because I am interested in an old question:

How do fly testes obtain their specific shape?

In my previous research I learned that muscle precursors shape it, using collective cell migration and alignement to achieve the pattern visible in this picture.

Mesonephric glomeruli of #zebrafish for #FluorescenceFriday 🔬
kdrl-mCherry nicely reveals the capillary tuft of the glomerulus.

The zebrafish kidney stops developing at the mesonephros stage! It serves as their main kidney structure, and they don't develop a metanephros like humans do.

So proud of #TeamTestis. Screening <270 lines for shape defects was a huge team effort!

I created this collage from the team’s images from the past 2 years! Depth-color-coded with Fiji. Inspired by late 19th century lithographic animal illustrations.

How proximal is proximity labeling❓ Using DNA nanorulers we found that TurboID/BioID are largely contact labeling, while APEX2 also bears a major contact labeling pathway in parallel with diffusive labeling.
