"The laws of the moon, a thousand year journey
To all, you may think of the chill night as infinitely far away
And now, let us go on our path of fear, doubt, and loneliness, into darkness"

The past few years have long-ended in sour notes, for all democracies of the world weather a storm and the very structure of our rights and liberties have withstood horrific affronts.

It is amid this, that I repeat to myself these words as a mantra. As our ancestors have before us, we must believe.

this is important to remember today for many reasons but one is that some of the most evil motherfuckers /today/ are actually imposing evil through extrajudicial channels and it is worth noting that because it's a rather strong argument in the postrevolutionary tribunal

In turn, the fall of Weimar Germany is a failure state of democracy, but it was not 'by democratic means' that it failed - the streets were claimed by thugs, and the administration that put Hitler into power - because the Nazis never won an election before banning their opponents - was Monarchist.

It was the most freedom that a normal average German person who doesnt like killing his neighbours had until 1949 in the West and 1989 in the East, even in the longue duree comparison to all of previous history. It should be mourned, not mocked.

People should genuinely be more willing to say that the German Republic of the interwar years was a great thing and that it is a shame it fell, imo, instead of handwringing about how it probably was inevitable.

Yes, I suppose you could say that the only thing they really value is domination - over women, over other men.

There is a reason that Tolkien sets the will to dominate as the ultimate source of evil, the fundamental vice from which all of his most terrible falls derive. It is a poison to the soul.

can’t forget the guy in a poli sci seminar who went on a rant about the United States spending too much, “40-60%”, of the budget on foreign aid on the same day we read an academic study of the public’s overestimation foreign aid spend.

dude was dumb, but his ilk have inherited the world.

Here’s my foreign policy analysis: we’re in hell
Foreign Policy Analysis is low key the darkly funniest field ever now. Are we at war? Does the president himself know? Who are we at war with? Why? Something to do with drugs and/or oil? We’re either invading Venezuela, Nigeria, neither, or both.
Either Trump believes the US struck a Venezuelan facility on Christmas Eve because he was told that erroneously, or he's conflating different stories, or we actually did what he claims. Regardless of explanation, we need that information.

I mean, the Europeans have a very good reason to believe the United States would betray them in a war on their continent against the Russians. Namely, that the United States is in fact doing that right now.

What I do not think the Washington understands is that it’s not Trump in himself that’s discrediting us to the allies. Every now and then in a democracy, the people elect a turd. It’s that the Constitution gives them a Mad King Removal button and they are too cowardly and cynical to press it.

I don't think I'll ever forget the video of the guy who just crossed the border complaining about the people coming *literally* behind him.
Because everyone in TX thinks that they and everyone who came before them is a native with deep roots who arrived in TX in the mists of antiquity, while everyone who arrived afterward is an illegal immigrant who swam across the Rio Grande only 5 minutes ago.

I think one of the fundamental problems of life in the Era of Phone is that it has become so easy to develop and spread brainwormed takes on any conceivable topic that a person needs an undergraduate-level grounding in eight or ten different subjects to not go completely insane.
Most people are ignorant on most things, being ignorant is fine. It’s the active, assertive pride in being ignorant as an organizing principle that’s really the awful thing. It is bad to be stupid. You should not be proud of being stupid.
An essential development over the past decade-plus is that the ignorant went from feeling chastened when their ignorance was revealed to banding together and deciding that, actually, they were right. They might disagree at times, but they agreed that ignorance itself was an indicator of trust.

So you have Christian Nationalists, whose bigotry is mostly anti-Muslim but who can be mobilized for a project of persecuting primarily *Hispanic Catholics* through vague talk of an 'invasion' where 'who is invading' is an exercise left for the reader to fill with their own bespoke bigotry.

Many technological advancements in the past couple decades seem to have fallen squarely in a "difficult to regulate - massive negative externalities" limbo that truly must be redressed for it has been a gnawing rot: more knowledgeable regulatory taskforces with teeth are required in every polity.
Okay, but the goal then must be to use technical competence to figure out ways for the law to actually deal effectively with this stuff, right? Not just throw our hands up and say "nah this is hard, stop trying to regulate the internet"

GOOD NEWS! Researchers have shown Alzheimer’s disease can be REVERSED- not just prevented. Using a potent neuroprotective compound called P7C3-A20, they found RESTORING balance to a central cellular energy molecule (NAD+) not only PREVENTED disease features but REVERSED them, EVEN at late stages.

Trump says this December 26 in an interview with John Catsimatidis that the US destroyed a drug trafficking plant in Venezuela on Christmas Eve.

“They have a big plant. A building from where the boats leave. Two nights ago we hit them hard.”

Republics are already unusual, rare, beautiful things, historically speaking. A republic composed of some small sliver of every country, people, language and culture is an even more wondrous, special thing. And to have it have succeeded so remarkably.

To betray that...I have no words.

One of the small ways the present descent into fascism makes itself both concrete and continuous against the background of day to day life is you’ll go see a movie with friends and then, before leaving, ask one of them if they‘ve heard anything from their disappeared tío. And then everyone moves on.
