like seattle, vienna is also undergoing an update to it's urban planning plan.

one of the things i'll note: while seattle call its plan a 'comprehensive plan' - it is anything but. vienna's plan is a STEP - stadtentwicklungsplan (urban *development* plan).

i think the terms here matter quite bigly

you can read the english version of vienna's 2025 STEP here.

also note the intro:
'It is an objective of urban expansion to create contiguous urban quarters instead of planning future neighbourhoods merely on a plot-by-plot basis.'

Word up. It's #FossilFriday. This week, meet Eophrynus. This is a ~315 million year old member of the trigonotarbids - an extinct group, related to spiders, whip spiders, and whip scorpions. Check out the spines! I love this fossil.

Fire departments often oppose urban infrastructure like roundabouts and road diets, citing access and equipment size.

My FD in Carmel, Indiana? No problem. We’ve got nearly 160 roundabouts, bike infrastructure, and road diets — they handle it just fine

If you can believe it, SDOT's planning documents call for this intersection of Nickerson & 15th Ave. W. to be even worse (but it doesn't have to be that way).

3️⃣ How it could look with a Dutch-style roundabout

So they did study just putting an old fashioned 4-way stoplight here, but they threw it out because it has the potential to slow drivers down a whole 2.5 minutes.

It’s a shame they didn’t study this exact idea but with a (Dutch) roundabout instead.

You can live in a home with a backyard, and depending on the street network design and lot size, experience vastly different urban typologies.

West University Place and Katy are both within the Houston metro area, yet these single-family cities have vastly different densities.
