Well this explains a lot.
We've been burying the lede on this for a while.

There are so so so many dumb things about this proposal. From the practical to the supply side to the predictable failure to the personal security implications to the reduced effectiveness vs plain old badges

*Not to mention that the entire convo is missing the point*

Abolish now.
Prosecute now.
The funny thing about scanning a QR code badge is that you have to hold your unlocked smart phone up in front of an ICE agent to do it.
I am introducing the Quick Recognition (QR) Act, which requires ICE and CBP officers to wear uniforms featuring QR codes. When scanned, the code would generate a digital ID displaying the officer’s name, badge number, and law enforcement agency.

ICE should be unmasked both physically and digitally.

Some samples of how QR codes are not great for scanning at a distance.

They're also not well-suited to embroidery. Would these codes be engraved in dual-color plastic?

This is beyond the basic understanding that they ARE NOT HUMAN READABLE.

This seriously challenges my brain.

Is he being paid off by bitly or something?
Everyone can relax. Democrats have a solution to all this...

Rep. Ritchie Torres is introducing a bill that would require ICE agents to wear scannable QR codes linking to webpages with their names.

If you're down for a long thread of horrific and comedic nostalgia, gotchu.
I know nostalgia for Blockbuster is a thing. I don’t really remember it that way. I remember it having fewer movies than the stores I went to as a kid. But I worked at Blockbuster when I was 17.

Here are some things that happened while I was there.

Hi!! looking for sources for a story on how people are using X's Grok to disproportionately target women, girls, trans, and nonbinary people by asking Grok to undress them--do you know anyone impacted by this who could talk about it (anonymity available) or any experts? #journorequest

Just a reminder that we successfully cut child poverty in half and then just decided we didn’t want to do that anymore
With the expiration of ACA subsidies, the pandemic welfare state has officially ended.

Probably just a coincidence that the pandemic-era policy Democrats managed to keep alive the longest is the one that spent tens of billions on health insurance companies.

Been thinking lately (today) that when next I have a convo with a staunch capitalist, I might not try to convert them, but rather to show how the argument is largely about where the boundaries should be (e.g. fire department, sanitation)

I was just denied access to the ICE processing center at the Whipple Building.

Members of Congress have a legal right and constitutional responsibility to conduct oversight where people are being detained.

The public deserves to know what is taking place in ICE facilities.
JUST NOW: Huge mass of agents in a standoff, weapons drawn as Reps. Ilhan Omar, Angie Craig, and Kelly Morrison attempt to conduct congressional oversight at the Whipple Building, which has been HQ for thousands of ICE agents.

I was largely ignorant of this.
Genuinely had never heard of or seen the 1990 Capitol Crawl protest until a TikTok last night and holy shit.

Every ICE employee who turns a member of congress away is committing professional misconduct. Professional misconduct can't be pardoned.

The next Dem president can fire them all for cause on day one, and use an administrative process to go after their pensions.

Dems need to say they'll do this.
Update: ICE has denied the members their due right to conduct oversight

I gotta agree.
I'm actually surprised by the lack of violence.. which is not a great place to be!
It seems inevitable that some kind of violence or rioting will erupt at some point. It's surprising, and impressive, that the most that has happened so far is assault by sandwich.

No matter what happens, remember this: All blame lies at the feet of Trump and of ICE.

Trump, Miller, and ICE are playing with fire and we cannot help them stick the blame elsewhere.

General precarity means that safety can't be had without power.

I've heard people say that ICE is already de facto trumps goon squad. More than that though, it's also a method to transmit power to those who will do anything for it.
Somehow, in all of this, kicking a candle off a memorial is still wild.

Also notable how the officer closes the distance to the guy, and then tells him to back up.

nyt breakdown is actually pretty good, including (though not so clearly) how they showed the aftermath of the shooting (crash) as demonstrating evidence of danger to officers.

That section bears special notice I think.
