🌪️As global climate disasters mount, the insurance protection gap is widening.
Natural disasters caused US$320 bn in losses globally in 2024, according to Munich Re.

But Japan remains an exception: its insurance protection gap isn’t yet pronounced.👇
How Japanese insurers are keeping the climate protection gap at bay
While the insurance protection gap is widening in many countries due to climate change, the same isn't true of Japan as yet even though premiums are on the rise.

With all the noise on climate @netzerotracker.bsky.social's Stock Take is the signal.

The finding that sticks in my head:

🇺🇸US corporate net zero targets grew 9% over last 12 months, 279 ➡️ 304

Yes, some are blowing with the political wind. But more are stepping up.

By mapping 74 institutions, we find the dominant way of understanding climate risk focuses on risks to business actors — shaped by the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures under the G20’s Financial Stability Board. Other climate risks — to people & nature — are sidelined.(2/3)

This is big (and bad) news: New Zealand's government has withdrawn from the Beyond Oil and Gas Alliance, which a previous NZ government joined at the Glasgow climate summit in November 2021.
NZ pulls out of global coalition for phasing out fossil fuels
The move follows the Budget announcement of $200 million to support new drilling for fossil fuel fields.

I’m obsessed with protecting seals: ‘The flying ring toy was deeply embedded in her neck’ 🦭

It broke my heart to see a seal so injured by a £1 plastic toy. Now I campaign to ban them – and it has changed my life. 👏

Treasury Sec Bessent just signaled at a closed-door JPMorgan event that the US-China tariff standoff (currently 145% US tariffs, 125% China tariffs) is "not sustainable" and will de-escalate "in the very near future." Trump later confirmed final tariffs won't be "anywhere near" current levels. 1/

The crisis for UK steel is exposing another – perhaps even bigger – crisis for the UK

Our news media seems incapable of even the most basic factchecking

YES energy for UK steelmakers is costly
NO it's not due to net-zero
YES it is due to GAS

Here's what UK media isn't telling you🧵

Another fun analogy is that tariffs to “re-industrialise” the US is a bit like using (massive, sudden) carbon pricing to completely reshape your energy systems.

Good morning with good news: 80 nations produced more than 50% of their electricity from clean sources in 2024.

47 nations generated more than 75% from clean sources.
