Amorim doing what he should have been doing for the last 12 months. Using a system that makes best use of the players he has available, rather than shoehorning players into a system that doesn’t suit them.

Test cricket isn’t complicated. Easiest way to win is big 1st innings runs. Doesn’t matter if they’re slow or quick runs.The 2 series wins we’ve had in Australia I’ve seen have been built on that. Apply that pressure and everything else falls into place. Easier said than done, but not complicated.

I’m calling that a decent day. Could have been better, could have been worse. Great knock from Root. Amazing the obsession we have with numbers. He’s great player because he’s scored 100 in Australia. Would he have been less good if he’d scored 90?

Sad news about Robin Smith. Outstanding player. Those of us of a certain vintage loved watching him bat. Probably the last England batsman I can remember who didn’t always wear a helmet playing fast bowlers.
