Yikes - the land surrounding the Cerne Abbas Giant is up for sale!

Lot 1 is top-quality chalk downland bursting with wildflowers & butterflies - orchids, skippers… going for £950k. It absolutely needs to be preserved. Hope the NT or similar can buy

This should be a lot of fun! Help us find out if BES journal data and code sharing policies are actually working, with a little side bonus quest about data equity 🤓

Great to see @charles-cunningham.bsky.social's paper out on the impacts of woodland connectivity on the presence of woodland species in the UK. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/... Although ecologists talk about connectivity being important to maintain, the evidence that this is true is weak. 1/
A figure showing how different invertebrate species show impacts in relation to woodland covr. Overall the connectivity effect is small, but all groups show it.

The beauty of trees as lidar point clouds... 3D pixel art 🌳 🧊
Here, an oak forest stand from the North of France, with a dense understory. Voxelised with AMAPVox @umramap.bsky.social, from our terrestrial lidar scans!

A forest stand visualized as 3D pixels, or "voxels", extracted on a 20 by 20 m square. It is dense, but the different tree stems are easy to distinguish. Voxels are colored by height, from dark blue near the ground to light green in the top of the canopy (24 m height maximum).

The simplest thing you can do to help butterflies this summer is grow your grass long to help species that have been reduced by up to 86% since 1970.
