Unexpected side-effect: how common medications clear the way for pathogens

CMFI's @lisamaierlab.bsky.social @unituebingen.bsky.social show in @nature.com: many non-antibiotics weaken the natural protective function of the intestine.

Press release: www.cmfi.uni-tuebingen.de/en/news-even...
Scanning electron microscopy image of a gut bacterial community (1:1.000.000). These interacting microorganisms form an ecosystem that is vital to human health. Medications can severely disrupt this fragile balance – they eliminate beneficial bacteria and thereby promote the growth of harmful species.
Image produced by the Maier Lab (Lisa Maier, Anne Grießhammer, Leonardo Boldt) together with the Tübingen Structural Microscopy Core Facility (Michaela Wilsch-Bräuninger, Stefan Fischer); Colouring: Elke Neudert.

Another fantastic study from @lisamaierlab.bsky.social showing how non-antibiotics impact gut ecosytem. Congratulations @ghammeranne.bsky.social et al.!

It's finally out!🎉

We known that the #microbiome confers colonization resistance against #pathogens, we know that some meds 💊 affect gut microbes 🦠

So, do 💊 alter colonization resistance? It turns out that some do! If you wanna know more, check out our latest work www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Stephan Kamrad and Tara Davis in the Patil lab at the MRC Toxicology Unit have identified that some drugs and environmental contaminants alter gut bacterial amine metabolism.

Do people in the same household share strains when they have the same species?

How many cells transmit when a strain is shared?
Can strain composition be dynamic when species composition is stable?

We answer these and related questions for the facial skin microbiome in our latest paper.

So at the beginning of my postdoc I struggled to amplify Chlamy genes (easily 75%+ GC) and did pretty much the same comparison and found the same results

DMSO= helps but kills pol processivity
Betaine= Lots of spurious products
1,2-propandiol= processivity retained and usually specific product

RESULTS

Gel order:
Upstream homology arm, downstream homology arm, full length locus with target gene in middle, a not so great detection primer set. Ladders are NEB 1KB Plus. Arms 1kbp. Full locus 2880bp. All amplified in same conditions.

Today we report that an engineered skin bacterium, swabbed gently on the head of a mouse, can unleash a potent antibody response against a pathogen. Could lead to topical vaccines that are applied in a cream. @djenetbousbaine.bsky.social led the charge... @natureportfolio.bsky.social 1/55

Resistance to one antibiotic can make bacteria resistant or sensitive to another antibiotic, opening paths for combinatorial treatments. A study in Nature Microbiology presents an approach to systematically discover and understand such antibiotic relationships. https://go.nature.com/49of3Mk 🧪
This is figure 4, which shows collateral sensitivity and cross-resistance interactions between and within antibiotic classes.
