A while ago I gave a talk on "Doing research with Australian population-level administrative data" (specifically, PLIDA).

The talk contained tips and tricks that may prove useful to both beginners and experts, and so I am sharing the slides here:

A really neat article on fertility:
ourworldindata.org/total-fertil...

Charts out the fertility dynamics and explains the complicated relationships between different statistical measures, such as TFR and CCFR.

Rather than being singled out as the awful parent that exerts too much control over their children, parents who don't want their kids to spend all the time on social media will be simply following the law. This might work, perhaps?

On the topic of social media ban: I'm really curious how it'll play out.

My Slav reference frame had me initially thinking that this will be a completely ineffective political gesture, but based on conversations with teachers, the ban might give parents more agency in saying "no" to social media.

The Australian government to kids:
In the style of the piracy is a crime meme but with some fun new fonts in the mix because I’m lazy: ‘You wouldn’t git clone a repo’

I fear somebody in the Australian government may have misunderstood the meaning of pull requests

The list of social media platforms that Australia is considering to ban (under the new restrictions for Aussie teenagers) includes—yes, you read that right—GitHub.

Plus, any website that features the word "Hub" should be treated with utmost suspicion.
jankabatek.com
Come to think of it, GitHub *is* the problem.

❗The committed code is too curated. Nobody talks about their bad code.

❗People seek stars, forks and other forms of external validation

❗Peer pressure, FOMO, sedentary lifestyles... it checks all the boxes!

Fair play, tbh. Any website that features the word "Hub" should be treated with utmost suspicion.

At last, the new generations will be growing up without the constant need to compare themselves to the unattainable ideals of code quality and version control 🥰

Some important findings in this paper:
1) Working with AI boosts the performance of people solving math, science & ethics questions
2) The biggest boost is for the hardest problems
3) High performers remain highest performing, but low performers gain more
4) People who are good with AI gain most

Fair point. I did some digging, and it is worth acknowledging that our partner organization, Dilin Duwa Centre for Indigenous Leadership, has been established partially through a donation made by BHP. My own department is not receiving any funding from fossil fuel industries.

"The labor participation rate for women with children younger than 5 had the biggest midyear drop in more than 40 years during the first six months of 2025."
Remote policies helped women work. In-office mandates and child care costs are driving them back out.
Low flexibility and high child care costs are pushing mothers with young kids to the sidelines after they joined the workforce in record numbers during the pandemic.

Thanks for the reply, Ilari. I reckon this boils down to semantics.

According to the internet, European countries tend to follow the Eurostat standard, which includes the 60% median measure, and a supplementary measure of material and social deprivation (AROPE).

Definitely better than Oz atm.

This indicator is extremely useful. One can easily track the latent drivers of poverty, and evaluate which ones are becoming more important over time 📈

🦘 Australia deviates from the rest of the OECD by not having an official poverty measure (❗)

Melbourne Institute's Melek Cigdem-Bayram proposes a comprehensive poverty indicator that tracks numerous aspects of socio-economic deprivation 👇

We can’t fix what we don’t track. That’s why Australia needs an official poverty measure
Some estimates say up to one in seven people are living in poverty, but Australia doesn’t properly measure it. Here’s how we could.
