Sam the rural health advoCATe adds: treating rural areas as “punishment” is not going to help rural recruitment.
Also: putting folks who haven’t used their clinical skills in years on the front line is not good practice.

NEW: RFK transferred 70 public health officers to work for four months at far-flung Indian Health Service sites. Though the help is desperately needed, the deployment threatens to disrupt vital disease tracking and harm reduction work. www.politico.com/news/2025/10... w/ @mayakaufman.bsky.social
‘Straining everything in our system’: Indian Health Service transfers leave leadership vacuum
The four-month deployments are unusually long and target a chronic issue rather than an isolated emergency.

We’re recruiting a postdoctoral fellow to join our team! 🎉

I’m happy to share that I’ve opened back up the search for this position (it was temporarily closed due to funding uncertainty).

See lab page and doc below for details!

Sam's guardian just attempted to check some info on CDC WONDER while writing a peer review (yes, SG is *that* reviewer). Got the message below. Sam the rural health advoCATe is hissed.

It's October already. While there is a LOT going on, Sam the rural health advoCATe would like to remind folks of one very important event: National Rural Health Day, Thursday, November 20, 2025. Forget turkey day, this is the BIG ONE!

So I have a lot of thoughts on this:
1) this young man died of #COVID19 - the pulmonary hemorrhage was likely due to significant vascular inflammation, well documented in literature. I'll be honest, I don't think being admitted would have changed his course and eventual death.

My family & I are still processing the events of the past 24hrs. There is so much to say; for now I will keep it brief:

Juan was observing the situation at the ICE detention facility alongside other elected officials. He was in a designated protesting area & was standing peacefully when video shows

RFK Jr. also falsely claims that with the government shutdown:

“Democrats want to hurt hospitals and clinics in vulnerable communities by repeal of $50B in rural health care funding”.

He omits the fact that the “One Big Beautiful Bill” cuts $187B and that rural health clinics are already closing.

Sam the rural health advoCATe is worried about rural hospitals and their survival. And as a public health cat, he is also worried about a "who deserves it" tone in many comments. Public health cares for all, even those who disagree/are disagreeable. Dead folks can't change.
