New neuroscience short story forthcoming in @analogsf.bsky.social! Which also means a story of - ultimately successful - negotiations with their new publisher.

Includes full final text of my contract for all to use while they finish rewriting their boilerplate.

Happy Monday! Today's Classic Cover is the 1970 edition of Hope Mirrlees' Lud-in-the-Mist, originally published in 1926. This cover was illustrated by Gervasio Gallardo, who also created covers for Peter S. Beagle and William Morris.

I don't really care if the future is short videos. I like words. Words have gotten me this far and I'm gonna stick with 'em for the duration

Guess what?
The story about the trans M&S employee and the bra fitting is a pack of lies and distortions.

William De Morgan was the Arts & Crafts movement’s most brilliant and prolific ceramic artist.

This biscuit (cookie) set is inspired by some of his many tile designs. 🍪

Yes I would but that's because I happen to think the Ring novels are a real slog. They bored me as a kid and are, charitably, not my cup of tea as an adult. I vastly prefer the movies, which I think work better as vehicles for the story. This is, I acknowledge, a controversial stance.
Genuinely curious and not trying to start an argument: Would you say the same thing if someone recommended Lord of the Rings to a young fantasy reader?

I get that the idea is for everything in a book to either further the plot or illuminate character but I have no problem reading sections of novels that are there for elegant ornamentation or 'just because'.

I like books that meander into culs-de-sac as long as I enjoy the trip and the language.

For noen kan et lite regnbueflagg bety at vi føler oss tryggere. Man ser flagget og tenker; « her kan jeg passe inn»
En enkel måte å vite at jeg også blir satt pris på.

Veldig fin video

Today is National Biscuit Day, and it’s about time that I populated this account with biscuit (cookie) sets from the past few years. Here are some of my favourites. 🧵

First up, a set inspired by the delicious designs of William Morris and John Henry Dearle.

Could we—for fun, for science, darlings take your pick—but could we talk about what we’re doing in a geeky joyful nerdout way even if it’s small or is that too much like bragging or some inscrutable social code i don’t understand

things that please you inordinately. I got to try olive oil soap! 🤩

The sigil was drawn in salt and ash, the candles lit at the pentagram points, the incantation declaimed.

There was a shimmer - a demon appeared.

"Curious. What ritual is this?"

"I got it from ChatGPT. I included all protections in my prompt!"

"I see," the demon said and stepped out of the sigil.

As a SFF writer who is very interested in religion, in fiction and in real life:

Any attempt to lay out rules or laws or even guidelines for "how to depict religion in fiction" has not thought the matter through, IMO.

I took a basic drawing class and most of it was "look at the thing. No LOOK."

Being a person with deadly, incurable cancer who is nonetheless still alive for an indefinite timeframe gives me an interesting metaphor that helps me deal with things like large-scale corruption in government or commerce.

Bear with me for a second while I try to explain.
