You know what? Sure, let's treat Trump like a normal President.

Literally any President ever to serve would have been in fucking jail by now, so let's do that.

Out of 102 episodes globally in which a trend toward autocracy was reversed over the past century, the vast majority led to restored or even increased levels of democracy.

yeah i don't know why i'm asking that question either
If Pierre Poilievre can't pivot, could Jason Kenney lead Canada's Conservatives as early as 2026? Senator Charles Adler tells us he wouldn't be surprised. How about you?

I just got a email from Kindle unlimited saying we have discovered a billing error. We didn’t actually charge you the new subscription price but that’s OK. We’ll charge you 1199 on 21 January instead of the wrong 999 so guess what I’m doing on January 19.

Put your books in Kobo!

Me: (typing) Not now, brain.

Brain: Don't you wanna know what it is?

Me: NOT NOW, BRAIN

Brain: I'm not gonna lie, it's SUPER cool

Me: LET ME FINISH THE NOVEL IN FRONT OF ME, BRAIN

Brain: Okay, I'm gonna tell you

THREAD: The FDA has made it difficult to find where medications are made. Today we're changing that with our latest tool.

With Rx Inspector, it’s possible to see your drug’s manufacturing facility and what the FDA found during its inspections.

Here's how you can use it. 1/

Usual reminder: decisions like this don't mean that AI can do the job of a human translator; they mean that some C-suite creature who is basically a LinkedIn profile wrapped in ham and an expensive suit has decided it provides an alibi for paying human translators less money for less rewarding work.
French publishing house Harlequin decided to use AI translation instead of human translations.

All their freelance translators (some of whom had been working with Harlequin for +30y!!!) were told they would no longer receive work from Harlequin

Incredible words.

This is why all these discussions are just eugenics wrapped up in process and anecdote. You can’t explain the outcomes without acknowledging privilege UNLESS you think white men are genetically superior. They all disgracefully think that but most are too chickenshit to say it.

Authoritarians love LLM AI because it's an easy way for them to manufacture reality, to manipulate numbers, to force their agenda on others. And users of AI, the botlicking technosloppers of the world, will not only say "these are interesting ideas the AI is telling me" but "these are my ideas."

I'm going to surface this thing I wrote earlier today complaining about the grindy part of fiction writing (trying to line up everything so that it's consistent emotionally, physically, intellectually, etc) just because I see people worrying that real human authors will be forced to turn to AI.
it's the part where you go through it and are like "oh fuck, I changed that to an afternoon conversation, now I have to change all the referents here to be at night" and "am I using the same name for all my minor characters or is that one character using three separate names all starting with M"

NB: When I, a professor of law, profess that an act is unlawful, I am not doing it to inform the lawbreaker, but rather to inform you, the reader.

So the question “what, like you think he cares?” is inapposite. The question is whether *you* care. I think you should, which is why I bother.
