I say this with zero irony: if you are even tangentially a part of a retro video game community, it is your civic duty to push back against this company and shun anyone who doesn't. This is fascism tapping gently at the door and as soon as you let it in, it's going to invite its friends.

I honestly don’t know if this is 1:1 applicable, but I think it’s relevant that the Luddites didn’t “smash the machines” because they were being replaced, or they feared the machines.

They did it because the machines let the companies make WAY more money, yet the Luddites’ wages weren’t increasing.

I'd maybe be excited for a Naughty Dog space game if they wouldn't abuse their employees to make it.
'Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet' is reportedly slated to release mid-2027

• Naughty Dog has enacted mandatory overtime for staff to get back on track after missing internal deadlines

• Some employees are worried demands could worsen next year if crunch is already happening now

Larian’s usage of genAI is by no means close to the worst I’ve heard of (not a defense-just saying) but if companies can learn one thing from this backlash, I hope it’s that nobody wants this and you will actually EARN goodwill (with gamers AND creatives) by outright banning genAI usage.

Look, we're not sure if adding asbestos to our product is useful or helpful or something our customers are even interested in, but it's a competitive industry and we have to be willing to adopt asbestos rather than be left behind.
We want to assure our audience and our fans that we only use asbestos in our production flow ethically.

We understand there are a lot of concerns about asbestos, but we only use asbestos in small portions and only in places you can't see it.

We promise to expose you to asbestos responsibly.

Ah so it's even worse than we thought. Neat.
If I had known the two paragraphs about genAI in my article today would be so controversial, I would have expanded them a bit! Here's a rough transcript of the relevant portion of my interview with Swen Vincke, so everyone has all the context. (Full article here: www.bloomberg.com/news/newslet...)

These dipshits don’t realize that its not JUST the use of AI that’s the problem: its the erosion of trust. They can say “oh its just for placeholders.” Or “oh its just for pre production” too bad, we cant trust you. Once its used, Its pandora’s box. You can’t un-fuck this

Swen's justification of his initial quote is hilarious in a very bleak way.

You can't "explore" ideas by using a machine that can do nothing but spit out what tou put into it. That simply isnt how that works.

Further, it doesn't save time if your art team has to re-do everything your machine does.
I don't think Larian's CEO understands how art is made:

Larian Studios, developer of Baldur's Gate 3 and the just-announced Divinity, is apparently using generative AI behind the scenes.

The backlash has been swift and loud, and now Larian founder and game director Swen Vincke has responded to clarify his remarks. https://bit.ly/4qcNbSz

Using gen ai for text and asset placeholders is not solving a problem; games have been made for decades with regular placeholders. studios using AI this way are just testing the water to see what more they can get away with - which will inevitably mean laying off skilled workers, to make worse games

Look at this concept art for C-3P0 by Ralph McQuarrie.

It's the very thing that inspired Anthony Daniels to go for the role of Threepio and perform him as such.

It is the first heartbeat of the art that now exists.
