it's literally too much text for the alt text. i wrote too much about tentacles
honestly i just like drawing these little creature vignettes. it's fun to think about what's worth depicting, what i have depicted, and how they'd behave in nature. tentacles are definitely the most varied of fuckcreature. while mimics can theoretically look like anything, they all more or less behave the same. and while there's plenty of diversity among slimes, they're very easy to categorize. but tentacles are just plain Weird, scientifically. fantasy fuckworld doesn't have the technology to figure out the evolutionary genetics on these things to form a coherent taxonomy, so they tend to be sorted by what they Do rather than anything else. a majority of tentacles are stationary ambush predators. they feed on whatever toddles into their reach, or is attracted to their secretions and gets stuck. depending on the size and type, they'll eat anything from bugs to small animals to...larger animals. they'll draw whatever they catch into the center of mass, where it will be crushed and digested through the skin. most tentacles form colonies, similar to the man o'war, in that they're made up of multiple individual organisms serving different purposes in different shapes, but are genetically identical and act as one creature. i've drawn them all the same shape for simplicity's sake, but there's absolutely variety, particularly with their reproductive organs vs grabbing arms. in the first image, we see a semi-domesticated pot colony, a common pit colony, "danglers", and a "mat". the first two are fairly self explanatory. danglers hunt by draping themselves down from trees or byways, hoping to catch something passing through the air below. mats form within cracks in walls and floors of tight, damp caverns, and are made up of hundreds of small cooperative organisms that will instantly react to grab anything that brushes against them. the tentacle creature chique was recently seen wrestling with was a floor mat type, making use of a specialized organ. in the second image, we have examples of ambulatory colonies, symbiotic colonies, and an independent tentacle. some colonies will behave similar to tumbleweeds, and actively filng themselves around with their strong arms in the hope of colliding with something edible or fuckable. they'll latch to whatever they encounter and, if it's alive and the right size, do what tentacles do best. shamblers, on the right, move more slowly through their environment, sweeping the ground for anything edible. they're basically seastars. they're not as aggressive as tumbleweeds, but can be very difficult to escape if they're big, and they can get Very big. below are two examples of tentacle symbiosis. best known as barnacles, these are suckers with either a single or several tentacles rooted within its body. the sucker provides the tentacles with a safe retreat inside its sturdy body, and the tentacles provide their host with food and access to reproductive targets. they can be pretty dangerous if you're not paying attention, given they don't always know exactly what part of you they're grabbing. 'selfish' behaviors have also been observed in tight settlements of barnacles--they don't like to share with each other, and will attempt to steal prey. if you find yourself grabbed by multiple at once, watch out! and lastly is the lonely individualist. often mistaken for snakes, these are tentacles that are simply one long body. their threat level depends entirely on their size, and they can get big. that said, their bodies do have an upper limit for girth, and will simply get longer as they age. but that upper limit again depends entirely on their species; some have been observed growing as thick as...certain very large creatures' appendages. there is a thriving community of hobbyist and professional breeders, pursuing flashier and more attractive color patterns. anyway, that's all well and good for how they hunt and eat. but why do they fuck?
