This exact thing happened to us, winter of 2024! ScotRail had said they’d either get us a taxi or hotel. When we got to Inverness, the taxi was waiting; but it had begun to snow, and I wondered if I should have insisted on the hotel.

A delightful description in here from 1925 of Harry Stephen Keeler's writing space, which includes blackboards of his novel plots coded with colored chalks, a massive wall of filing cabinets, and a pet rabbit named H.L. Mencken.

Growing up we had a “mixer tap” in the kitchen that did not mix the water; it gave adjacent streams of scalding hot and freezing cold water. I didn’t realize that was because true mixer taps were ILLEGAL in Britain when our house was built.
Freeze or scald? The choice is yours! There’s an interesting reason why you see separate hot and cold water faucets in the UK.

Not only is there good old shoe-leather reporting here, but if you scroll to their "Related Stories" at the bottom, it reads like the amazing saga of story after damning story on Rep. Ogles.

That’s about 2%. The annual attrition of federal workers is 6 - 7%, which raises the question of whether Trump’s team of megaminds basically just promised a shitload of severance to people who were about to leave anyway.
