A lot of people with these qualities left academia because you didn't reward us or understand when we were blocked by others but y'all aren't ready to have that conversation I guess

The Nobel Prize is the wrong way to think about science.

My heroes aren't the people with the endowed chairs at the Ivies. They are the people who do the hard work, day in and day out, and who would take a bullet rather than inflate research findings or block others' competing research.

hey gabby- do you have data you would like to curate for #TidyTuesday? The functions in the TidyTuesdayR package make it SUPER easy to make a pull request. Check out Jon's instructions here...

And let me know if you need a hand, happy to help!

This is SO awesome, “shut up and code” were some of my favourite @rladiessydney.bsky.social events. Set a timer, code for a bit, when the timer goes off chat about problems, try to help each other, usually just commiserate… super fun

The Pac-Man Rule should be adopted at all conferences and meetups - it's so much more welcoming!

Also an excellent use of a pie chart! 📊

RTing myself to make sure we're keeping our 👀 open. What @jcheng5.bsky.social found via databot was cool but a) *Joe* (not databot) found it by noticing that the bot mentioned a weird thing, and b) we don't know how many people found it and didn't point it out to me.

* no human told me about it before Joe. I can't say for sure that no human caught it. A lot of the people examining #TidyTuesday data are more likely to assume they're wrong than to assume I'm wrong. Still a very compelling example but I want to make sure we don't forget who we are 😊

The Henley Passport Index data is interesting. I was curious about the relative rankings of the United States and Singapore and found that you get a bit of a different story if you plot ranking vs. visa free countries. #TidyTuesday #rstats

code available here: jenrichmond.github.io/tidytuesday/...
This line chart tracks passport power rankings from 2006-2025 for the US (blue) and Singapore (red), where lower numbers indicate stronger passports.
The US passport declined dramatically from rank 1 in 2006 to rank 10 in 2025, with brief recoveries but an overall downward trend. Singapore showed the opposite trajectory, improving from around rank 8-11 in the early years to consistently holding the #1 position since 2020.
The chart illustrates Singapore's rise to the world's most powerful passport while the US faces potential exclusion from the top 10. This line chart shows the number of visa-free countries accessible to US (blue) and Singapore (red) passport holders from 2006-2025.
Both countries started with significant differences in 2006 (US at ~129, Singapore at ~122) but followed similar upward trajectories until 2017, when both reached around 185-187 visa-free destinations. Since 2017, Singapore has consistently exceeded the US, reaching ~194 countries by 2025 while the US declined to ~182.

The issues on github are full of dataset suggestions that just need a little work to get them ready for a pull request.

Check out the issues- write an intro or pull together the metadata and submit a PR to help keep #TidyTuesday going.

Many hands make light work!

One more thing.. remember how @jonthegeek.com was asking for help in creating a bit of a runway of #TidyTuesday datasets... you don't even need to find a new dataset to help.

Big thanks to @beesm.bsky.social for helping me curate the #TidyTuesday data this week.

If you have an idea for a dataset but lack the skills to get it, just ask for #rstats help!

Brenden showed me how to use `httr` to access data via an API and how to wrangle JSON data and it was SUPER fun!

Do not make your PhD your identity. Yes, you pursue your studies because of your passion. But give yourself the freedom of objectivity and have a backup plan so that you can walk away confidently if it comes to that. It's a big world out there, and there are so many ways you fit into it.
