Very sad news, John Gurdon has died.

A developmental biologist's developmental biologist, Nobel prize winner

His work is the foundation of much of today's dev & stem cell bio.

An inspiration to many, including me. Always asking questions & wanting the answers

"The work I was involved in had no obvious therapeutic benefit. It was purely of scientific interest. I hope the country will continue to support basic research even though it may have no obvious practical value."

Very saddened to hear of John Gurdon’s passing. I’ve been lucky enough to interact with him at multiple points through my career - from undergrad lectures, through his position as former Chair of @biologists.bsky.social’s Board of Directors, and as an author at @dev-journal.bsky.social.

If you’re applying to your dream lab for an internship/PhD/postdoc, always send a second email 1-2 weeks after the first one if you don’t hear back.

I promise we will be grateful rather than annoyed. My email inbox is a disaster and I’m quite junior - and very few of us have secretarial support

The hack definitely derailed things. But I just flew back from Heathrow that was affected by the same hack & there it’s business as usual… Good luck on Tuesday! I’m also flying again then, but from Dresden this time. At least not the getting to airport hassle (which is an ongoing issue…)

Yes — almost impressive how much worse it’s now. Handwritten boarding lists, phoning into HQ to confirm these. & travel to airport taking 4h b/c of neverending construction works. Which easily becomes 6h with @deutschebahn.com chaos. Shameful how Germany can’t get such basic stuff to run smoothly.

I can confirm that Berlin Airport is an absolute shitshow atm

Berlin airport disruption is wild, gate agent is verbally conveying every boarding pass name and seat over a personal cellphone and getting a yes/no from HQ

I often emphasize that there are rarely "silver bullets" that magically solve problems but vaccines are one of the closest things we have and it's mind-boggling and enraging to watch this "debate" unfold during my lifetime
