it's weird to live in a world where the President says stuff like "THE DAY OF RECKONING AND RETRIBUTION IS COMING" in all caps at 540am on a random Tuesday

if an 80+ y/o man yelled at you at 530am on a Tues about a day of reckoning, you would rightly dismiss them as a crazy person briskly walk away

The "logical reason to smile" is to create a more pleasant environment and/or experience for others. When I'm in an environment or situation where people's facial expressions range from blank to scowly, I feel strongly inclined to leave and not come back.

The change in this modern era that I never saw coming was the complete abandonment of ethical, legal and moral principles by conservative and religious Americans. I find this change profoundly shocking. Ideology is now more important to these people than corruption, crime, decency and truth.

I’m white and male and lifelong conservative Republican and I saw the fascism in Trump in 2015, which is why I refused requests to work with him, and made enough noise to get myself professionally and socially ostracized.

This is the same playbook Trump used with banks & other investors for decades. Get them so deep into your mess that they end up even worse if they allow you to fail. So he argues they have to stick with him or everything will fall apart and be a disaster. Too leveraged to fail.

Wrote this in Sept 2025. Revisited today, just to check the status. All of the situations are still “tenuous,” none of the areas are settled.
Just checking in: in addition to not settling seven wars, Donald Trump has started a new one, so that's how that's going. @markhertling.bsky.social from the archives: lnk.thebulwark.com/4pCOzNB
No, Trump Hasn’t ‘Settled Seven Wars’
And he should be called out on that claim every time he makes it.

What if I told you that the United States already had a treaty obligation for the mutual defense of Greenland should it come under attack.
Leavitt: "The president was very clear last night. He said he wants to the US acquire Greenland because he feels that if we do not, then it will eventually be acquired or perhaps even hostilely taken over by China or Russia. Perhaps it would be in the best interest of Greenland to be part of the US"

It’s one thing to choose not to participate in the International Criminal Court. It’s entirely another for the U.S. to punish its judges like they are criminals.
The penalties effectively cut the judges off from all American funds, goods and credit cards, and prohibit individuals and business in the U.S. from working with them. “We’re treated like pariahs, we are on a list with terrorists and drug dealers,” Ms. Ibáñez said. www.nytimes.com/2026/01/10/w...
