Have you read the article at the top of the thread? If so, can you address any of the arguments it makes? Because to my mind it makes a very clear, compelling case for why the things you're saying, while superficially appealing, are wrong.

This is a really excellent point. It's fine that Taylor Swift's last two albums haven't been very good. She's been at the top longer than anyone can reasonably expect. (But also it's either "Heroes" or Graceland, depending on how you're counting.)

A "pro-Palestine' march passes me in Bath. Perhaps they're good people, I think to myself. The hippyish Quakers I remember from, say, being a member of Bath CND in the 80s. They're not *necessarily* antisemites, I say. So I check out their X feed. And it's awful.

In honor of National Poetry Day, the greatest parody rewrite of all time:
Screen cap of parodic version of William Blake's "The Tyger" that begins:
Tyger! Tyger! Burning bright
(Not sure if I spelled that right)
What immortal hand or eye
Could fashion such a stripy guy?
What the hammer that hath hewn it
Into such a chonky unit?
Did who made the lamb make thee,
Or an external franchisee?

I also think one should be very modest about one's ability to predict the moral judgements of future people.

The Mail says that they can run a false front-page headline by the smallprint attributing the false claim to Mr Farage

Got a weaselly reply back from reader's editor Ashlee Gagui about this lie on the Daily Mail front page explaining why "We are therefore entirely satisfied that there is no possible inaccuracy contained within the page" that broadcast a total lie - apparently it's ok because it was Nigel Farage's
Daily Mail Front Page MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 2025 By Jason Groves Political Editor

After PM attacks Reform's 'immoral' policy on scrapping leave to remain, Farage blasts back...
Worried about immigration? Starmer says you're racist

KEIR Starmer was last night accused of insulting millions of voters worried about Britain's borders as he branded Reform's immigration plans 'racist', Amid growing Labour panic at Reform's surge in the polls, the Prime Minister ramped up his rhetoric against Nigel Farage's plan to tear up residency rules, saying it 'needs to be called out for what it is'. Mr Farage said the claim was an insult to millions who want the Government to finally get a grip on immigration, telling the Daily Mail: The
Prime Minister has insulted those who believe mass migration should come to an end. Starmer thinks anybody here on a time-limited visa is entitled to stay in Britain for ever. Labour do not believe in border controls and think anyone who does is racist.'
Highlighting a series of polls suggest-ing his party is on course to win the next election, Mr Farage said: 'Keir
Turn to Page 4 Thank you for your letter. We are always grateful to receive feedback from readers, be it positive or negative, and appreciate the opportunity to address your concerns regarding the front page of Monday’s newspaper.

The headline which you believe contains an inaccuracy was precisely constructed to be read in conjunction with the preamble text – the ‘kicker’, in newspaper parlance – and the following body text. The kicker makes it clear that the headline is a direct reference to Mr Farage countering the attack on his party’s policy proposal as immoral – the last three words, followed by an ellipsis, illustrate that the headline is his view:

[kicker] After PM attacks Reform’s ‘immoral’ policy on scrapping leave to remain, Farage blasts back...

[headline] Worried about immigration? Starmer says you’re racist

[copy] KEIR Starmer was last night accused of insulting millions of voters worried about Britain’s borders... Mr Farage said the claim was an ‘insult’ to millions who want the Government to finally get a grip on immigration, telling the Daily Mail: ‘The Prime Minister has insulted those who believe mass migration should come to an end. Starmer thinks anybody here on a time-limited visa is entitled to stay in Britain for ever. Labour do not believe in border controls – and think anyone who does is racist.’

The body copy then goes on to confirm that the headline is an accusation made against Sir Keir by Mr Farage, whom it goes on to quote We are therefore entirely satisfied that there is no possible inaccuracy contained within the page. Nonetheless, as I set out at the start of this email, we value criticism and observations from our readers, and would like to thank you for taking the time to write.

Kind regards

Writing an article for a general audience already counts as impact, but it's pretty peripheral. The action is in impact case studies, and for those you need to be able to demonstrate your work has made an actual change in the world. An article could be part of that, but it's unlikely to be central.

So for this guy, you only get 5/5 if you've not only produced something of transcendent quality but also somehow produced it out of nothing. Otherwise you get 4/5. That can't be right! It has to be possible to get the top result without actually being God.
jimbaxter.bsky.social
Similarly 10/10 and especially 5/5 doesn't mean perfect. For example, I once saw someone in an Amazon review refusing to give 5/5 to Robert Johnson's collected works on the grounds that he had been influenced by previous blues musicians....
