Good on Penn Jillette. Having to come to terms with your entire political identity and philosophy being wrong is not easy and most people could never do it.

"A viral essay has caused outrage in the US with its argument that the poverty line for a family of four is now $136,500. But is this so wrong?" Yes.
No.

This is very helpful
Rightly lots of debates about growth this weekend - rightly because it was low productivity growth that saw wages entirely flatline during the 2010s.

I remember lapping this up when I found it a few years ago. A masterclass on writing.
Nine years ago Mike Fitzgerald wrote up an extraordinarily fascinating breakdown of the differences between the Tom Stoppard shooting script and the original Jeffrey Boam draft of Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade.

I've mentioned this quietly, but - since the summer my hobby has been making this ambitious murder mystery podcast. A story. Narrated by me, with a mouthwatering cast. Partly interactive. Trailer is coming tomorrow but if you like the sound of this, please follow @murderbastard.bsky.social.

This is an excellent piece of work. It is a playbook of vexatious litigation. It’s written for the leaseholders in the case reported by @sheffieldtribune.bsky.social but it is useful for anyone facing lawfare. www.facebook.com/100064191813...

Its Been a Leasehold/Mr. Milne day today. If your worried after receiving his threats, residents in sheffield have compiled a factsheet to try to help. they are really gathering pace in Sheffield...

I wish I didn’t have to share this. But the BBC has decided to censor my first Reith Lecture.

They deleted the line in which I describe Donald Trump as “the most openly corrupt president in American history.” /1

You can't. It's a disgrace.
I'm not sure how anyone who lambasted Jenrick for painting over children's murals at an asylum centre can stay quiet over this.
The Sun has been told Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood will on Monday propose confiscating jewellery, watches, necklaces from asylum seekers to meet asylum costs

This reflects the most controversial aspect of the Danish scheme - the Jewellery Law. The toughest Labour MPs thought this was OTT

Asylum claims have been around 100k/year for the last few years. (Around 3/4 eventually get their claims approved)

Gross visa grants: work migration+dependants are around 400k

Live births are around 600k/year

These are gross figures (immigrants and ppl born in UK also leave)

This is as bad as anything proposed by Reform.

Leaving refugees in permanent limbo and unable to build a new life in the UK would be a complete abdication of our humanitarian responsibilities

UK set to limit refugees to temporary stays
Shabana Mahmood is expected to say the era of permanent protection for refugees is over, in major changes to the UK's asylum and immigration system.

Was reminded of what we use to say in the UCL BA Philosophy handbook. A more eloquent version of:

The Philosophy Department does not regard philosophy as something the teaching staff have exclusive access to but rather regards tutorials as a mutual search for the truth.

Japan's "Mundane Halloween" costume contest is back!

Each year website DailyPortalZ holds a contest where people dress up as something super duper ordinary.

Here's a thread of some of my favorites from the 2025 contest!

🌳 As a #NationalTrust member I’ve just voted for the recommended slate to keep out the bogus, right-wing entryists of “Restore Trust”. Anything this creep wants is bad for Britain and bad for our heritage.
🌳 If you’re a member, vote Recommended Slate now: www.nationaltrust.org.uk/who-we-are/a...
One vital reason to vote in the National Trust elections and for the NT endorsed candidates. We can't risk the Restore Trust candidates getting any influence on it.

My new book, #IntoTheGroove, the history of 1980s pop, has plenty on its origin and background, and it’s OUT NOW.

Think we’ve crossed a pretty major threshold – and a very bad one – if a journalist working in the lobby for a major newspaper group can tweet like this without professional consequences.
A mainstream “journalist” calling for a British MP to be deported. Is it because I’m Muslim? Next time, just say it with your chest.
