I'm willing to offer that we no longer have a functioning Congress. Their complicity in Trump's authoritarian rise has essentially erased Congress as a co-equal branch of government. And we all know the Supreme Court has played a role in his authoritarian rise. This is all by design.

Happening now: several hundred people are pouring into Chicago's downtown Federal Plaza.

It's 25 degrees outside.

Organizers are leading the crowd in a chant of, "no boots on the ground, no bombs in the air!"

Two protesters hold a large banner reading, "no war for Venezuela oil."

Every month when I go to the pharmacy, I think back on the last several decades of right wing propaganda that tells everyone union dues are theft and I just shake my head. Then I smile.

It probably goes deeper than that, she looked too hard for a gun that went missing in the police station, then talked to investigators and she got whacked for crossing the “blue line”. It’s likely he didn’t act alone.

The Mayor has budgeted $5 million for a ShotSpotter replacement for CPD.

You really could not have a clearer illustration of the choices between community resources vs state surveillance, and so far, as usual, the choice is state surveillance.
NEW — Cutting less than one day of the Chicago police would cover the $4.5M needed to ensure there are no cuts to library staffing and resources, one resident writes.

Striking a boat full of unarmed civilians is murder. The first strike was murder. The followup strike was also murder.

We're not at war. It's not a "war crime". Everyone involved, including the POTUS, SecDef, the Admiral who relayed it and the person who pressed the button needs to be on trial.

CPD’s gang database rears its head again.

“Chicago’s sanctuary rules barred most data sharing with immigration officers, but a carve-out at the time for ‘known gang members’ left open a back door. Over the course of a decade, immigration officers tapped into the database more than 32,000 times.”
NEW: DHS secretly obtained Chicago police data on 900 residents accused of gang ties. It was quietly deleted after intelligence officers violated rules against domestic spying.

The handoff came well after city inspectors formally announced CPD's gang data was deeply flawed and infected w/ bias.
DHS Kept Chicago Police Records for Months in Violation of Domestic Espionage Rules
The Department of Homeland Security collected data on Chicago residents accused of gang ties to test if police files could feed an FBI watchlist. Months passed before anyone noticed it wasn’t deleted.
