Topological data analysis which uses pure #maths techniques to analyse (big) #data is one of our favourite topics at the moment. In the latest episode of our #podcast Mike Hill explores it further, including applications in social justice plus.maths.org/content/topo...
Topological data analysis with Michael Hill
Find out how topology, traditionally part of pure maths, can help us understand big data, with applications in areas such as cancer research and social justice.

People are running stats on LLM-generated participants and think they’re being social scientists when in fact they’re technically just playing a very strange video game. This is like saying you’re doing math research because you’re playing sudoku.

AI-generated ‘participants’ can lead social science experiments astray, study finds
Data produced by “silicon samples” depends on researchers’ exact choice of models, prompts, and settings

🚨 New paper: Who climbs the Ivory Tower? 🏛️ Together with Nicolai Borgen and Astrid Sandsør (@astridsandsor.bsky.social), we find that the chances of becoming a professor differ enormously by family background. Here’s what we find 👇

Alrght everybody, get your Tin Can Telephones out. We need your help!

We reach new people by word of mouth. Send all your educator friends this pic! Teachers, librarians, scout troop leaders, etc! We offer our program for free, so we need help getting the word out without advertising $$.
A purple and red octopus talk to each other on the tin can telephone. Purple octopus says “want to connect your students with real
Scientists?” Then red octopus says “Skype a scientist matches groups with scientists for virtual q&as. It’s free!” And then an orange flapjack octopus says “get a match at skypeascientist.com”

1/2 Dogs are capable of forming mental categories of objects, despite not having language or being trained in symbols.

The dogs (mostly border collies) categorized new toys based on their experience with them.

Podcast | "Medicine in Auschwitz"

Participation in selections of Jews became one of the deadly duties of the SS physicians in #Auschwitz. But it was not the only one.

Our podcast about medical crimes at Auschwitz: https://www.auschwitz.org/en/education/e-learning/podcast/medicine-in-auschwitz
Selection at Auschwitz II-Birkenau. An SS doctor in a uniform is standing in front of a line of people approaching him. A man with a walking stick is right in front of him. The SS man points him to the right. He would join a large group of maan standing in the corner of the frame in the distance. Those people will be murdered in a gas chamber. Railline and a building is visible in the background of the photo.

When we posted this a couple of weeks ago, we had some AI enthusiasts insist that this diagram was the result of poor prompting, or that the prompt that the original poster made was to generate a funny, bad diagram. So we decided to test ChatGPT's capability...

Today in AI Is Not A Good Source For Learning About The World's Most Misunderstood Body Part, meet this ChatGPT gem.

Funnily enough, we're actually going to talk about how most of this is kinda sorta right (for small values of right), as a cautionary tale about generative AI.
Screenshot of a reddit post: ChatGPT asked if I wanted a diagram of what's going on inside my pregnant belly.

A screenshot of ChatGPT's response. It is a side view of a foetus gestating in the uterus. The foetus is head-up with no umbilical cord or placenta. Behind the uterus is the rectum, which is unlabelled. Trailing down from between the rectum and spine, extending beneath the buttocks to the inner thigh is a yellow line labelled "pudendal nerve. At the front is an oval-shaped part labelled "cervix". And then we really struggle to image describe this bit. The uterus and the bladder are both attached to a single part which is long inside, then extends downwards into a penis with a single exist. This penis is labelled "rectum".

All of this to say: you can coach women for leadership all you want, but that won’t fix the structural problem. It mostly helps those who already “made it,” not the talents on the verge of leaving.

p.s. many men in those positions actually urgently need the coaching for these roles.
