Five years ago, the president of the U.S. launched a self-coup to stay in power.

He wasn’t punished, ran again 4 years later, and won.

Our current politics and the state of U.S. democracy are downstream of this.

And that was with a target known to have been behind the worst terror attack in U.S. history!
It’s important to note that if there is any increase in approval rating for Trump, it will likely be short lived.

Following Bin Laden’s death in May 2011, Obama got a 7% point boost.

And it lasted only 5 weeks.

The Social Network has only grown in stature over time.

The initial criticisms—dramatic exaggerations of Zuckerberg’s petty, thin-skinned ruthlessness, and the utopian zeal of the Silicon Valley elite—were wrong.

If anything, the film was too restrained.

George was just trying to get to work.

ICE pepper-sprayed him, dragged him from his car, locked him in a detention center, and placed him on suicide watch. He even missed his young daughter’s birthday in the process.

This man is a veteran and American citizen. Don't look away.
"They put me on suicide watch and they put me in the cell, I'm naked, in like a hospital dress and just a concrete bed with like a mattress, like a thin mattress and, they leave the light on 24/7."

Some thoughts on where we are right now and the state of US democracy.

Trump is both deeply unpopular right now—and yet more politically powerful than during his first term, thanks to a pliant Congress and Supreme Court. That’s an uncertain, and dangerous, place to be.

Trump isn’t a popular president.

That means he and his advisors have incentives to use heavy-handed repression.

What’s unfolding in LA is a deliberate effort to stoke outrage and invite violence.

It’s a risky and dangerous strategy.

See bsky.app/profile/zeit...
From a pro-democracy perspective, Trump’s falling approval ratings are a good thing.

But today’s arrest of a Wisconsin judge is a stark reminder: declining popularity often brings rising repression.
