Godfather of the Emancipation Proclamation

Keeping Americans out of Canada since 1814. I told you you'd miss John Quincy Adams when he was gone but you just didn’t listen.

You can land in contempt of court for violating a court order. There's an argument for treating the violation of the Epstein Transparency Act as the violation of an order. It's not a statute with general application. Only the DOJ can violate it.

Defying a subpoena is one thing that can land you in contempt of court, but it's not the only thing. There's reason to think that might have a parallel in Congress.

In what I think is the earliest case on the subject, Anderson v. Dunn, there doesn't appear to have been any subpoena at all.

So... it's not entirely clear to me that inherent contempt requires that there be a subpoena issued and then flouted.

In practical terms, that is what Members will likely insist on as grounds for their vote. But I'm not convinced it's actually necessary. Maybe a good idea, but not a requirement.

Broader lessons should be learned from the centrist establishment's mistaken belief they could maintain popular support for Israel by allying themselves with the right and wagging their fingers at the left.
NEW Quinnipiac poll of registered U.S. voters:

• Half now say Israel is committing genocide in Gaza

• Only 47% see backing Israel as a U.S. interest, down from 69% in 2023

• 60% oppose more military aid to Israel

• 58% favor UN recognition of a Palestinian state

Decent start, now also explain how you're going to break up the TV-station conglomerates that gave Carr the leverage

Not dumbest, laziest and completely lacking ambition beyond in-house careerism.
They literally closed Congress for like two months over the Epstein files, it’s a stupid easy play for low info voters, but unfortunately the Democratic Party is currently run by the dumbest people alive
fuck it, throw in the Epstein thing

"Republicans are shutting down the government to keep the Epstein files secret" seems like it would work idk

A politician welcoming the feds of any stripe into our cities is the same as welcoming ICE. There is no other way to put it. Very disappointing words to hear in the face of this invasion
"I have been very clear about what we do want. What we do want is civilian law enforcement assistance. We want to make sure that we have enough FBI, ATF DEA on the ground.”

I understand this calculation.

It is the wrong calculation.

Every one of these agencies is being used for immigration.
NEW — “What we're hearing is that they'll be assembled, ready to go on Friday, and that they would begin actions on Saturday,” Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker told reporters just now, speaking about Trump’s fed deployment.

A new paper by Nobel Prize-winning economist Claudia Goldin has found that countries where men take on more of the household labor and child care — in other words, those who buck traditionalism’s standards of the provider husband and homemaker wife — have higher fertility rates.
To raise fertility rates, it’s not women who need to step up — it’s men
New research found that countries where men do more housework and child care have higher fertility rates.

I was just writing some notes about this for myself. There are two basic approaches:

1) Break the power of the court, or 2) capture its power from the radical right.

Capture is technically easiest: just expand with a Dem president to appoint 5-7 new justices. Straightforward, but yes, arms race.

Breaking its power means changing how it operates.

"Circuit-izing" the court by expanding it & having it hear cases on randomly selected panels weakens it by dividing it internally. Adding members randomly from the circuits also; so does reforming the cert power to abolish the shadow docket.

Harry and Louise sitting at their kitchen table killed Hillarycare in 1993 (back when anyone knew what this means) and elderly Dem electeds have thought ever since that it was the table that was the silver bullet and can't stop trying to recreate it. Sheer gerontocratic cargo cult all the way down.

Those comments about 'Popeye's doesnt fit in our community" are a lot more ominous when you know Evanston has a large black population basically centered around the location of the proposed store and that it already is littered with fast food restaurants.

Third: The text of the Constitution promises that appointment to the federal judiciary is for “good behavior,” which is a term with a commonly accepted meaning at the time that can be redefined. Moreover, it says being a federal judge is a good behavior gig—not the circuit or role.

I’m just saying that we could absolutely make 18 year terms for SCOTUS justices by rotating them off of the court and onto another circuit.

Also among their number is Rep. Sarah McBride who, in addition to being the first openly trans person elected to Congress, is an ordained PC(USA) elder.
hey do you actually know who Roy Cooper is or the fact that he was instrumental in defending trans rights in NC or are you just a wrecker?

I know it's not as heroic as not bothering to try to run the clock out on NPR/PBS cuts because you have a flight to catch, but what would the opportunity costs of trying to hound Trump from office even be?
I cannot overemphasize that YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT WILL HAPPEN, and basing your actions on the assumption that you know the entire range of possibilities will reliably make a fool of you.

Is it likely that Trump is booted out in disgrace? Doesn’t seem so. Is it possible? None of us know, actually.
Do not give up prematurely on the idea of hounding him from office
