Congratulations lawyer Dan on winning one campaign finance case after another. One of our finest legal minds, who takes only the dumbest possible cases.

Apply this language to higher levels of government in this country and see how it sounds: "the executive is having his allies push to change the constitution so that he can hire whoever he wants to lead vital executive departments, with no confirmation vote from the legislative branch."

POWER GRAB: 6-5 majority of commissioners on this work group say council shouldn't get a confirmation vote for mayor's picks for directors of public works, community planning/economic development, civil rights, health, emergency management, regulatory services, assessor.

PACs will flood this November’s election in Minneapolis with almost $2 million, most of that going to boost the chances of Mayor Jacob Frey and centrist City Council candidates. Who’s bankrolling this fundraising bonanza, and what do they want in return? racketmn.com/meet-the-big...

I don’t know what other cities look like, but I think that the commissioner of health role is one I want the Council to vote on. Probably others as well, but there are real implications to the way that position approaches public health that directly affects residents.

Public works is massive! The quintessential government function is streets! The idea that the city council wouldn't get a confirmation vote for public works director is nuts. These charter commissioners have lost their minds.

Looking like voters may have to defeat this charter amendment whenever it arrives on our ballots. I'm waiting for someone to point to specific examples of a confirmation process that went off the rails because too much scrutiny was applied. Most confirmations are quiet and non-controversial.

With the MNDFL rescinding the endorsement for mayor and rejecting the appeal, 😤 I also updated this digital graphic. Plz feel free to save + share, and if you'd like the design files to print, get @ me.

Many thanks to @viamarsala18.bsky.social for the inspo + everyone who joined the collaboration.💖
Design featuring text and two columns of vertically stacked images of candidates for mayor of Minneapolis - MN Sen. Omar Fateh, Rev. DeWayne Davis, and Jazz Hampton - and their campaign imagery above the lit skyline of downtown, with the lit clock tower at City Hall in the lower center. Text reads: "MPLS: RANK THESE 3; FATEH: *Labor Endorsed! LET'S WORK TOGETHER; (don't rank frey) DAVIS: WE DESERVE BETTER; (don't rank frey) HAMPTON: TURN THE PAGE; (don't rank frey) for mayor on election day; 11.4.25"

Mayor Frey is an enigma: A 2-term mayor with a message suggesting he's the zero tolerance on encampments candidate, yet he has presided over an endless string of encampment tragedies. The shootings, fires, the wackamole strategy, those are his results. The rhetoric doesn't match reality.

Next steps (continued)…
The next meeting of the Charter Commission Government Structure Work Group is not yet scheduled.

The next meeting of the Charter Commission is Wednesday, December 3 at 4 PM.
joshmartinmpls.bsky.social
At that point, based on the commission’s historical practice, there will then an opportunity for public comment and public hearings before the commission makes a final decision on placing a proposal on the ballot.
joshmartinmpls.bsky.social
Given the very close vote, Co-Chair Barry Clegg indicated that they would simply report these results to the full commission and make no recommendation. The issue will be considered by the full commission at its December meeting.
joshmartinmpls.bsky.social
Both before and after the vote, there was some informal discussion about a potential compromise about a sort of "Modified Column B," which would add in Public Works (but no further departments).
joshmartinmpls.bsky.social
Since A wasn’t faring well, they voted again on just B or C. That looked like this.

B - Holquist, DeMello, Ginder, Perry, Smith, Garcia
C - Boone, Cooper, Kozak, Ney, Clegg

6-5 vote in favor of B
joshmartinmpls.bsky.social
The initial breakdown looked like this:

A - Clegg, Cooper
B - DeMello, Perry, Smith, Holquist, Ginder, Garcia
C - Kozak, Ney, Boone

Commissioners in favor of having a broader range of which positions are subject to confirmation noted issues such as this serving as part of a system of checks and balances, and department heads developing relationships with the council and community early on.
joshmartinmpls.bsky.social
Commissioners in favor of limiting confirmation further noted issues such as the appointment process impacting recruitment, clear lines of authority (“14 bosses”), and dept heads serving primarily as subject matter experts.
