What are you reading to start off the new year? I'm digging into The Bright Sword by Lev Grossman, my first fantasy read in quite some time!

It's possible that a year from now, on Dec. 31, we will be able to say that things are better now than they were a year ago. I don't think that was possible a year ago. So there's something to hold on to!

I didn't write nearly as much as I wanted to this year — and I had tons of ideas for reported pieces, critical analyses, and other articles that never saw the light of day. But here's a thread of some of the stories I worked on that I am most proud of: bsky.app/profile/cand...
I interviewed historians about the White House's request to review the Smithsonian. While they are frustrated, none are surprised. They say we're in an uncritical era fueled by misinformation and a lack of nuance that the president is merely exploiting.

Fifty years ago, Harlow was the queen of Philadelphia nightlife, Jack Kelly’s girlfriend, and the city's most famous transgender woman. Today, she’s ready to tell her story.

#NoKings in rural Sylva, NC. In the mountains for a girls' getaway & this was our closest protest. I'd guesstimate 500 or so folks are here.

No Kings protest in The Woodlands, Texas (north suburban Houston). This is the first such protest to occur in the community. I overheard a number of folks telling others that they had never attended such an event before but had gotten to the point of feeling they needed to do something.

I was at the the No Kings march in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Many elderly or disabled folks who couldn’t make it to Manhattan, but also young families and people of all ages. I stood in the same spot for more than an hour and the stream of protesters was constant. Amazing turnout.

My message to Republicans based on what I’ve seen firsthand at a No Kings protest and via photos and video of protests nationwide: Y’all whacked a hornet’s nest. You can pretend the swarm ain’t there, but that won’t keep you from getting stung.
