Looks like today's job numbers revision are a distinct lagging indicator for the 2024 election. And perhaps a less clear but just as potent leading indicator of 2026 election.

We might all be better off if it were illegal for elected officials to host podcasts, which does not seem like a core part of democracy to me. https://www.nytimes.com/2025/03/12/us/politics/gavin-newsom-podcast-steve-bannon.html
Gavin Newsom’s Podcast Hosts Steve Bannon, Covering Musk, Trump and Taxes - The New York Times
The California governor hosted one of the architects of President Trump’s political movement on his new podcast, and their friendly sparring revealed a few points of agreement.

Upside down world dept.: So Bannon goes on Gavin Newsom's podcast (???) and when deficits are brought up claims that the deficit was $400 mln to $500 mln before Covid. Almost balanced. No pushback by the Gov who should be governing. Actually deficit those years -- half to 3/4 trillion.

Trump's Ukraine aid cutoff feels a lot like Hank Schrader's death in Breaking Bad. Trump had already made the decision to decapitate Zelensky even before he entered the Oval Office. In Hank's terms, we all were too stupid to see Trump made up his mind days ago.

Jamie Dimon, adherent of the profoundly deep it is what it is economic philosophy. This is what people say when they have nothing to say or when they are cowering.
Billionaire oligarch Jamie Dimon on Trump's tariffs causing higher prices: If it's a little inflationary but it's good for national security, so be it. I mean, get over it.

Here's a quick piece I wrote up on how to understand DOGE as a very blatant attempt at procurement capture, a simple way of making government spending corrupt to benefit the tycoons. Please do pass it along & share any feedback! www.anildash.com/2025/01/04/D... (Thx for the nudge to write it!)

Harris mentioned it but w/o the important next part. Something like: what I am going to do instead is a real plan -- cut premiums by tk%, limit healthcare inflation to tk%. Whatever, don't just admire someone else's ignorance/tell people why they should vote for you She didn't do that well enough.
“Concepts of a plan” was one of the most memorable lines of the entire campaign and Harris hit Trump for it during literally every single one of her stump speeches. It only “basically never came up” if you weren’t paying attention.
It’s cool that we just had a presidential election where healthcare basically never came up. They don't even pretend to care anymore

More Susan Collins: He has learned his lesson. He assured me. He is not going to be the way he was anymore.
Two months from now:

"I was shocked by the announcement. And now I’m very pleasantly surprised!"-- Susan Collins

But it is so much less surprising now that bewilderment has given way to "yep, that doesn't shock me anymore."
The next 4 years and 2 months are going to be just one "I knew things would be bad but I had no idea they'd be this bad" after another.

Yeah, racism is a narrow part of the problem. Economic pain -- in the form of $6 butter covers all less wealthy demographics. One vote out of 100 thinking differently changes the results. That needs to be remembered.
