Europe’s labour productivity gap with the US has widened since the mid-1990s and again since the Covid pandemic. This column uses comprehensive cross-country firm-level and sector-level data to trace the roots of Europe’s productivity problem. It shows that productivity growth of Europe’s large leading firms has been trailing that of US counterparts. Young firms in Europe also exhibit weaker dynamism, have a smaller economic footprint, and there is an overabundance of mature small and low-growth firms. Overcoming these challenges will require reforms in education, regulation, and the innovation ecosystem.

Heat waves are bad for productivity. In this big data study in OECD countries, the authors find some evidence of adaptation but the effect is limited. This suggests that it will be difficult to avoid the costs of climate change without further adaptation (e.g. mass migration).

The heat is on: Heat stress, productivity, and adaptation among firms

Frequent and intense heat episodes can strain workers’ cognitive and physical abilities, drive up absenteeism, and disrupt vital infrastructure. Drawing on data from over 2.7 million firms across 23 advanced economies, this column explores the impact of heatwaves on firm labour productivity. More frequent high-temperature days and heatwaves substantially reduce labour productivity. The impact is particularly severe for smaller and less productive firms. Some adaptation may have already taken place, underlining the importance of adaptation investments to safeguard productivity in the face of a warming climate.

Le travail des chercheurs INRAE a permis d'améliorer les conditions de travail sur les exploitations, de limiter la variabilité des récoltes et des revenus, de trouver des solutions à de nombreuses problématiques sociales et environnementales touchant l'agriculture.

Cette action de la FNSEA est triste. Pour connaître de nombreux collègues INRAE dans toutes les disciplines, je dirais que ces chercheurs aiment, souvent avec passion, l'agriculture et les agriculteurs qui la font. Depuis presque 80 ans, la contribution de l'INRAE à l'agriculture a été immense.
