states and political structures and such are there to serve humanity, not the other way around. nationalism is a lie and should be rejected. we need to be pretty clear about this.

Here's the thing. I am a lucky person and pay a fair bit in taxes. I can think of no better use for my tax dollars than feeding children, because I think all people are equally deserving of basic humanity.

The elimination of USAID is a moral atrocity and all involved made a choice to enable, and then lie about, ending the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in the world.
MAE SOT, Thailand (AP) - Mohammed Taher clutched the lifeless body of his 2-year-old son and wept. Ever since his family's food rations stopped arriving at their internment camp in Myanmar in April, the father had watched helplessly as his once-vibrant baby boy weakened, suffering from diarrhea and begging for food.
On May 21, exactly two weeks after Taher's little boy died, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio sat before Congress and declared: "No one has died" because of his government's decision to gut its foreign aid program. Rubio also insisted: "No children are dying on my watch."
That, Taher says, "is a lie."

@himself.bsky.social talking sense, as usual. Notably: “The administration would have played its cards differently if it had a stronger hand.”

this is sort of where i'm at. i caught the tail end of Lee Greenwood at the RNC in between interviews, and I've heard Bad Bunny mainly on the Peloton app. The fact that Transatlanticism and Antics are both over 20 years old is kinda my entire personality.

this is an important warning for Gen X and millennials (and borderline cases like myself): some boomerism may be a life cycle effect. Be wary.
juliaazari.bsky.social
not the point, but Mike Johnson saying that they should have had Lee Greenwood instead of Bad Bunny is the most boomer-ass shit on the planet, and Mike Johnson is *solidly* Gen X (b. 1972)

3. *Imagined* Schumer CW quote.
4. “These culture wars get sillier by the day.”

I keep waiting for the powers that be in media to grasp the concept of bad faith, realize how often "restore trust in news" and similar statements mean "stop doing journalism, lie more in ways I like," come from people ideologically committed to destroying trust in news, and can never be satisfied.

I too am keen to "restore trust in news" by turning a major broadcast network into a 24/7 slurry of right wing culture war propaganda and engagement trolling

it would rock to renegotiate the deal between universities and the federal government if we had an administration that believed in either

unless you're a woman running for president, in which case you did everything wrong. 2016 and 2024 have radicalized me in ways I'm still contending with

I don't think losing an election is immoral, or means you should never run again. even if you're a candidate I don't much like with positions I'm not excited about. people lose elections all the time, and often for reasons that don't have much to do with them personally.

But history didn’t stop in 1992 and then start again in 2016

like its fucking nuts that we don’t understand the “War on Terror” — the political event — as one that transformed American society and the presidency and how the GOP grabbed power, attacked civil liberties and … literally created the DHS

I'm not complaining about my own pay or situation, but this essay did make me think about all the things I haven't written over the years, and all the pitches I didn't make, because I just wasn't up for dealing with the harrassment.

People think they’re taking down a rich intellectual sinecure but they’re mostly terrorizing committed public servants who make $58,000 a year after 15 years of experience at a school that has to budget creatively so students can access textbooks.

This new column by @tressiemcphd.bsky.social makes me think about when I recently had to talk to the police for yet another safety plan, I tried to “lighten” the mood by saying that we all knew this wasn’t my first rodeo. www.nytimes.com/2025/10/01/o...
