It’s that glorious time of year, when the alpine larch trees (Larix lyallii), a deciduous conifer, turn gold before shedding their soft, fine needles.

You know it’s fall when the seed heads of our native blue grama grass
(Bouteloua gracilis)
curl up like eyelashes and scatter their seeds.

Plant day-neutral types of strawberries like this ‘Seascape’ variety and you’ll be picking right up until frost. Our cool September nights produce the sweetest fruit of the season. 🍓

After another spell of smoke blurring our sun, it’s fantastic to see bright garden sunflowers against a clear blue sky. If you look closely, you can see a bumblebee heading to join the pollinating frenzy on this flowerhead. This impressive ‘Pikes Peak’ variety is over 3 metres tall.

Yesterday was cool, cloudy and quiet except the call of a loon on water like glass. Happy weekend!

Spotted these tiny night-blooming wild scarlet gaura (Oenothera suffrutescens) still open on an early morning prairie walk. Their petals open white and fade to pink with age, giving the appearance of two-toned flowers.

The midsummer bumblebee buffet has begun on the tall white flowering candelabras of Culver’s root (Veronicastrum virginicum).

This is a beautiful, hardy tallgrass prairie plant for your pollinator garden.

Pulled some giant radishes from our salad garden yesterday. 🫜

I’m impressed with this ‘Rivoli’ variety from #WestCoastSeeds. Even at this size, they are crunchy and very tasty, not woody.

Like dazzling red jester caps on tall fragrant green stems, Monarda didyma begins its long bloom season in my pollinator garden, extending through August when hummingbirds stop to fuel up on its nectar during their southward migration.

Picked loads of home-grown, tasty raspberries this morning from a row of just six plants.
‘Steadfast’ variety developed by U of S has strong prolific canes and rarely suckers so it’s good for small gardens. #ediblegarden
