Nemo needs gap junctions, too. New preprint with Marleen Klann, Vincent Laudet, et al. showing anemonefish Snowflake mutant due to E42K substitution in Connexin Gja5b. Found exact same E42K in zebrafish gja5b (= leopard) by ENU, to the nucleotide! Details, inferences: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

New paper led by @seaprinceaaron.bsky.social in @currentbiology.bsky.social looking at the threats deep sea mining poses for sharks, rays, and chimaeras. We found 30 species are threatened via various pathways including collector impact and plumes at depth and pelagic discharge plumes.
Figure 1: highlighting various pathways through which mining can impact sharks, rays, and chimaeras including collector impact and plumes, and discharge plumes. Figure 2: The diversity of sharks, rays, and chimaeras impacted by deep sea mining operations. Nearly 2/3 of these species are already at an elevated risk of extinction.

Okinawa had its hottest September at 1.6C above the average. I filmed this mass coral bleaching last year, but didn't have the heart to share. Total annihilation of the first few meters of depth. This stuff happens before our eyes, and yet people who think it isn't real keep gaining power.

Huge news, and a confirmation of what NSF staff have suspected/feared for a while.
The head of the National Science Foundation’s budget office didn’t know what to make of the directive, according to an email obtained by E&E News.

OMB is targeting the agency’s research and education “accounts for a deferral package,” NSF budget director Caitlyn Fife wrote Friday in a note to top officials.

“I imagine you will all have questions, as do we,” she said. “However we are immediately focused on pulling the funds back to ensure there are no further commitments or obligations.”
