I think it’s important that English teachers share with students why they love reading.

I think it’s important that English teachers share with students why they love writing.

And I therefore think we need to make sure we pay attention to our own love of reading and writing.

Today, we at Google have a new product: what if you could could ask an app a question? Oh, we do that already? Well, what if we were a little bit worse at it? What if we also sometimes gave you egregiously wrong information? And what if it cost a billion dollars? Still not interested? It's mandatory

I am really frustrated that the press is discussing the destruction of USAID as something that has happened rather than an illegal action that will likely be undone in two weeks when courts tell the world that it was illegal.

This: in 2025 and beyond, I am definitely reminding myself that "writing = job skill" needs to be de-centered in my own communication to students

Instead: agency, thinking, understanding, reflection, joy.

And so much more.
Passing thought. Selling writing in school as a way for students to secure future opportunity was always a losing proposition. It's an even bigger loser now with ChatGPT, et al... Need to get students seeing how writing is a valuable and enjoyable experience for NOW. A way to practice agency.

This might sound like a hot take but friends: Read books as a hobby this year. It is one of the best things you can do for your brain to grow your thinking and perspectives.
If you want to be anti-consumption get a library card.

Bonus: in places like UK/AoNZ/CA library copies pay authors

Discuss their sentimental value, their rarity, their histories, then build amazing book nooks and shelves and little libraries to organize them

Here's the digital quote tracker students used with Their Eyes Were Watching God as we moved through the book.

Students matched each key quote with a "bid idea word" using a dropdown menu + explained why it supported it, in their interpretation.

The Handmaid's Tale is a good book. But did you know that there's a book written by a Black woman about a post-apocalyptic Earth heavily affected by climate change and societal decline. The book was published in 1993, but is set in 2024 following a presidential election 👀 #BookSky #BlackBookSky
