Dorothy Dunnett’s Game of Kings. Friends advised persistence and so I persevered reluctantly. Then came that plot twist and the whole book changed for me.
question: how much does it bother you in a book if you don’t quite understand what’s going on? what measures do you take to remedy this lack of understanding? what novels most rewarded your further investigation?

Immediate flashbacks! And I would devour every last word of this truly outrageous piece of scholarship!
Last semester, I had the opportunity to take a class on costume design in fantasy, sci-fi, and supernatural film and television. And for my final project, I chose to analyze the costumes in Jem and The Holograms! ✨

This quote always shook me. Reminds me of The Princess Bride: who says life is fair, where is that written?
But Terry adds the rider - unfairness doesn’t excuse inaction.

Good to know others also bang on about how deceptive the Mercator projection is.
Ooh. You may be interested in this.

Discworld QOTD, from Snuff

“Cheery was aware that Commander Vimes didn't like the phrase 'The innocent have nothing to fear', believing the innocent had everything to fear, mostly from the guilty but in the longer term even more from those who say things like 'The innocent have nothing to fear'.”

“Oh, I feel very angry a lot of the time," said Tiffany, "but I just put it away somewhere until I can do something useful with it.”

“I had to learn. All my life. The hard way. And the hard way’s pretty hard, but not so hard as the easy way.”

Witch Week by Diana Wynne Jones predates HP and has magic kids as social pariahs.
Actually please recommend books/series that feel anti-HP to you, Percy Jackson is an already accepted great one, I know there's at least one other big one I'm forgetting. Recent ones ideally, tho the Worst Witch was there first and deserves better ✌️
I wish they'd do a TV show of something like the Scholomance books instead of HP because it feels like something written to be the anti-HP and I respect that

The biggest man in that oval room was the one who didn’t raise his voice, but kept calm, and stuck to the facts. The care and concern for his people was written in every tired line on his face.

Feeling this. 650+ books here. Must’ve downloaded about 50% before I called quits.
It’s the last day to download Kindle books onto your computer before Amazon shuts off that feature. I have, of course, put it off until now, and now I am having to do it one at a time because there’s no bulk download option. We have, uh…844 Kindle books
