Direct air capture (DAC) continues to be small, slow, and very expensive.

Not because it’s an early stage technology, but because it runs into fundamental thermodynamic challenges that money can’t solve.

This is exactly why it’s not recommended by Project Drawdown.

Direct carbon capture falters as developers’ costs fail to budge
Some experts say the technology is crucial for climate change goals but scaling up is proving hard

Today is the DL for submitting abstracts for the next year’s ISFNR conference “Nature(s) in Narrative” in Reykjavík. Marjeta Pisk and I are convening a panel “Nature as subject and symbol: ecological perspectives in folk song traditions“, and there are plenty of other interesting panels too!

As a doctoral student, it took me several years to realise that the International Society for Folk Narrative Research ISFNR is not about narratives or prose traditions only but accommodates work on not-so-narrative folk genres and folk song research too.

Deleted my account.

Go to the Home page and the pop up to accept ToS will appear. Click on ‘Privacy settings’ - NOT on ‘Agree’. You can then access your Profile Settings in the top right of the screen and delete your account.

I'm sorry, worldwide, irrevocable, non-exclusive, transferable permission to my voice and likeness? For what now? In any manner for any purpose???

This is in academia/.edu's new ToS, which you're prompted to agree to on login. Anyway I'll be jumping ship. You can find my stuff at hcommons.org.

We have this new paper, led by Meghna Goyal, which provides the first global view of inequality in the agri-food system. We find that agricultural production has increasingly shifted to the South, but income is increasingly captured in the North.

How will Trump’s attacks affect higher education?

Let’s look to history

Germany's universities were the world's premier research institutions

Hitler destroyed them

How long did they take to recover?

They haven’t

You may be tying your shoelaces wrong.

And that's why your shoelaces always come loose.

Let me explain with a little bit of knot theory, laced with ethnography.

A couple of minutes of knot experimentation can save you a lot of time and trouble in the long run.

A thread about knots.🪢

A wonderful couple of days in Hof for our Anglo-German project StoryMachine storymachine.iisys.de. All things folklore, hypertext and digital humanities!

Haluan työttömyysturvan, joka sallii ihmisten tehdä vapaaehtoistyötä, hyväntekeväisyyttä, taidetta, tiedettä, kulttuuria, sekä kouluttautua, sivistyä, lisätä osaamistaan ja tehdä muuta haluamaansa rajoituksetta.

Sellainen työttömyysturva olisi taatusti myös halvin mahdollinen vaihtoehto.

There was a post on FB about 'small elves' in Scandi folklore, and whether any studies had been conducted on them. Because I cannot reply to the original post, I' ll share what I could find here. Disclaimer: I'm not sure whether the studies differentiate between 'big elves' or 'small elves'. 1/n

What is common in your field but shocks outsiders?

Translation is about 80% skill in your native language, 20% skill in your second language.

It's not about knowing what is being said. Anyone can do that. It's about saying the same thing in a different language with the same emotional impact.

What is common in your field but shocks outsiders?

Montessori and Waldorf are like, opposite ends of the spectrum in fancy educational philosophies in early childhood.

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

Onkohan kukaan Suomessa miettinyt sähköisen runokorpuksen luomista?
