When you hear people say
it’s getting lighter,
that at long last
it’s finally getting lighter,
you need to understand
such comments are about
the amount of daylight,
such comments are only about
the amount of daylight,
for everything else (alas)
is still just getting darker.

that I am tired
of hearing Christmas songs
wherever I go
but that I am tired
of hearing Christmas songs
interrupted by coughing
wherever I go.

You may be selected in the next wave.

wear a mask.

And if you want
to protect yourself
against the “something”
that’s going around:
wear a mask.

Due to the absence
of reliable data
it can be difficult to know
exactly how bad
flu and Covid and RSV
rates are at the moment,
but considering
that NYC’s department of health
is urging people
to wear a mask
it seems safe to assume
that the current situation
is pretty bad.

I have heard
that a pandemic doesn’t end
until the next one begins,
but having read that
“Once H5N1 is spreading
sustainably among people,
authorities may have only
48 hours
to prevent a pandemic,“
I now fear
that the Covid pandemic will end
when a worse pandemic arrives.

The man in front of me
looked at my mask
and asked: “you sick?”
I replied: “No.”
And then he stated:
“I can’t imagine wearing a mask
unless I’m sick,”
and though I wanted to say
“I can imagine getting sick
so I’m wearing one,”
instead I just said:
“the cashier’s ready for you.”

Australian scientist who alerted world that COVID is airborne wins top science prize

When the WHO falsely claimed in March 2020 that COVID wasn’t airborne, Professor Lidia Morawska took action—organising 239 scientists worldwide to warn about SARS-CoV-2 airborne spread and urge global recognition.

Brain fog is not an accurate term. It needs to be referred to as brain damage.

Yup.

were so empty.

If you are going to make public spaces unsafe for high risk people and refuse to take precautions, you’re either advocating that we all die without safe access to society or that our new, isolated existence is subsidized with your taxes. Which is it.
My unpopular take is that the government should mandate masked (respirators) shopping hours at essential grocery stores/pharmacies or provide a tax credit for delivery so disabled & immunopromised folks don't have to pay extra fees just to keep themselves safe and alive

were posters
showing tissues and honey
showing cough drops and tea
along with the words
“your fall wellness ritual,”
and while it’s always good
to have tea with honey
what you really need
in your fall wellness ritual
is a good quality mask.

Covid infections have never gone away. Just transparency. When the government declared the Pandemic over they:

Ended testing
Masking
Restricted vaccines
Ended transparency on the stats

It’s not over folks.

with every new wave
there are warnings
of which new symptoms
you need to watch for,
and yet
with every new variant
with every new wave
the main symptom
you need to watch for
is everyone around you
insisting that they
just have a weird cold.

As we waited
for the meeting to start
my work-friend confided
that he kind of misses the days
when meetings were online
as that way at least
he could see people’s cats,
and as I watched a coworker
across the room
coughing open-mouthed,
I sighed and said:
I miss those days too.

and she said it was canceled

and though I know
she meant it rhetorically
I responded: “yes, I can.”

If you thought wearing a mask was “too hard”, you really won’t like living with chronic illness.

Everything about the chronic illness existence is hard.

It’s suffering, fatigue, pain and abandonment.

It’s having to mask all the time because no one else wants to protect you.

My aunt, the doctor,
told me a new joke.
She asked:

Why did the UN
call its event:
“healthy indoor air”?

I said I did not know.
So my aunt replied:

Because
“healthy indoor air”
sounds better than
“the air indoors isn’t healthy.”

And then neither of us laughed.

she’s worried
about the plague,
for all of her students are sick
and she keeps remembering
how in the last century
writers would say “plague”
when discussing fascism,
so I asked her
which type of plague
she is worried about,
and the historian replied: yes.
