Those calling for Europe to "wake up" need to outline a plan. What does it mean for Europe to "wake up." I think Europe is very much awake. But it doesn't know where it should go. There's just a brain death default to more defense spending.

Big reforms are needed on defense and foreign policy 1/

Trump's plan appears to be for Venezuela to remain under the day-to-day rule of a senior chavista, with its democratically elected leaders excluded and its wealth controlled by American corporations. It's a scheme worthy of a mob boss. www.economist.com/the-americas...
Donald Trump wants to run Venezuela, and dominate the western hemisphere
Snatching Nicolás Maduro and attempting to take control of Venezuela and its oil is an extraordinary display of the new “Donroe doctrine”

Brexit is a disaster built on a mountain of lies. It was won by the worst abuses of democracy in modern British history, including 37% of rigged electorate, a torrent of hate and lies, electoral fraud, the biased BBC, intimidation of MPs, and foreign interference by Russia and American billionaires.

Second, Ukraine’s position may be better on the battlefield than ours was, but Ukraine is much higher on the Russian obsession scale than we ever were.

There’s no way that Russia will accept a mere Finlandisation of Ukraine and let it go. If Trump’s ”peace efforts” have shown one thing, that’s it

This week’s dose of Europtimism with @josephdeweck.bsky.social:

Perhaps for the first time in the history of European integration, elites are lagging behind popular demand for more Europe. When will political leaders start capitalising on it ?
EU integration has historically been a top-down project. That may be changing. On defense, in particular, voters seem to be willing to go further in advancing EU sovereignty than its economic and political elites. 👉 With @alanderminna.bsky.social for @politico.eu

Voters believe in a sovereign Europe more than elites
For once, integration may not be driven top-down but bottom-up.

Very true, this: voters in Europe are ahead of most governing elites on European integration.

The same goes for another once ‘sensitive’ dossier: support for Gaza/Palestine

One reason Putin now wants a "peace process" (or rather a "get Ukraine to surrender" process) is because in strategic terms the balance is shifting - and not in his favor. He's taking tiny slivers of ground for huge losses, while new UA weapons threaten deeper strategic strikes.

Indeed. The backbone of a triangular European security architecture is emerging, also following the defence agreement between the UK and Germany.
Today was the day when Europe announced that it is moving on:

The Franco-British agreement to establish a nuclear supervision group, and a permanent headquarters for the Ukraine coalition of the willing can become contours of a new European security architecture - this time without the US.
Contours of European Strategic Autonomy
Europe is moving on without the US, and the US does not seem to like it after all.

Excellent article. Europeans cannot afford to leave it to Trump & Putin to decide the future shape of European security; they have to help Ukraine to defeat Russia, & then set about shaping European security for themselves. That means being a lot more serious about defence right now.

Let's post this once more...

From the horse's mouth.

There was no uprising in the east of Ukraine, it was made in Russia, by Russians, and local oligarch mafiosi from the Donetsk region.

They kept the conflict going by shelling their own and blame the AFU for it.

Don't believe Russian lies..
Ex-Russian GRU officer Salikov exposes Russia

In a interview, Salikov, who arrived to testify at the ICC, tells how Russia manufactured a “local uprising” in eastern Ukraine, funneled weapons over the border, and shelled its own territory to keep the conflict.
