Ahmed al Ahmed, the man who tackled one of the Bondi killers, became an Australian citizen 3 years ago.

His deed was "his way of conveying his gratitude for staying in Australia, for being granted citizenship."

He took 5 bullets, and fears he'll lose his left arm.

Great reflections on American journalism today.

Note: you and I can influence positive changes in journalism by adjusting our news consumption habits. Shift your eyes (and money) to publications who “get it”.
America has tragically changed, but journalism is still stuck in old ways
The swift slide into authoritarianism should have been a five-alarm fire for the media

Will I ever get back to #knitting my Big Softie sweater? Yes, but I need a stretch of quiet time to do the last bit of shaping! I want it done by Wednesday so I can do mindless stuff in the car on Thursday, ha ha!

Meanwhile, I’m making another hat. This is for a good friend, details later!

The sun sets on our first snowy day in #Philly ! Tonight’s low 16F, which will feel like 4F with the wind. Hoping everyone has a safe warm place to be over these next few days.

A recent cardigan (button not added yet) and a 2008 baby cardigan which was a fun knit — one piece folded over and sewn together.

Bailout: someone swoops in to save a sinking boat.

What is happening with US farmers is that a few holes in the largest boats are being patched so they might not sink as fast. That’s a “stop gap”.

Smaller boats can apply for a fraction of the aid but most will get nothing.

Don’t use “bailout”.

“Most of the $12 billion in aid will not be available for farmers of produce and vegetables.”

This is a good article, but too many headlines are using inaccurate framing. This is not a “bailout”, it’s a stopgap that gives a little relief to corporate soy farmers and no relief at all to many more.

The Picacho Peak hat is soaking now. (Pic is unblocked.) I enjoyed this knit, it was interesting enough while not being too complex for road knitting! Took a test run on an AM walk and it was warm enough for a non-windy moderate winter day. More info in alt txt.

HCR does a great job summarizing the history of how news media has shifted to “culture wars” in the last 4 decades. The conclusion: it’s up to us. We need to actively find and support meaningful news sources.

I spoke in Warren County, Indiana tonight. The organizer of the event said they usually have around 30 folks who come to their holiday supper. Tonight there were 150 people there.

Things are changing. Especially in red states.

Yes! And the statistics don’t include independent voters (like me) who register D in order to have a voice in the primaries which often decide elections. Parties should have to convince folks to register with them by having a platform people want, not by holding our votes hostage.
Philly’s AFL-CIO President represents 150,000 union members — many of whom can’t vote in primaries because they are registered as Independents. He demands their right to cast a ballot

@handsoffnyc.bsky.social is training thousands of New Yorkers on how to protect their neighbors from ICE. Today, they are currently running two trainings in Brooklyn and the Bronx, both of which hit capacity because interest was so high.

This is the way, y’all—we protect each other, and we know it.

Winter’s here & I couldn’t find my favorite all-purpose hat — was very bummed. So, road trip project is a replacement. It’s cold so I dug out my Seriously Weatherproof Jacket and threw it in the car. Surprise! Later found my fave in a pocket! Deets in alt txt.

Welp, the drive from #Philly to #Rehoboth was a bit longer than expected but I got some road knitting in. Our room is comfortable, I enjoyed the cheesy electronic fireplace in the lobby, and hubby is ready to roll for tomorrow’s marathon!
