Leaving the ECHR could split Union Sir, In his article "Leaving the ECHR won't fix illegal migration" (Oct 6; letters, Oct 7), David Gauke makes the point that the Conservatives' decision to support complete withdrawal from the European convention of human rights is, at best, wholly unnecessary and at worst will make international co-operation on migration control and deportation much more difficult. He is right to do so. It is time for Tories to stop heading for the exit every time there is perceived tension caused by so-called foreign institutions that my party actually helped to create in the first place. To claim that ECHR withdrawal will not affect the Northern Ireland Good Friday agreement is naive. Not only will it risk undermining trust in policing and criminal justice cross-border co-operation, it will trigger a breach of article 2 of the Windsor framework and a climate of instability that can only assist advocates of a border poll that could lead to the break-up of the Union. For the Conservative Party to advocate such a move is a betrayal of Conservative principles. Absolutely made up for my pal Sanna Duthie who ran the ENTIRE LENGTH of the 180 mile Pembrokeshire coast path in 48hrs 26 minutes on the weekend.

I've been involved in ultras one way or another for 20 years and I've never known anyone with so much resilience, but so humble with it. Utterly amazing.

Trump’s whopping great tariffs on the tiny African nation of Lesotho sum up the full madness of the scheme.

US imposed a 50% tariff on Lesotho, whose average citizen earns less than $5 a day. Why? Because the formula for supposedly "reciprocal" tariff rates has nothing to do with tariffs. The Trump team have calculated each penalty by dividing the U.S. trade deficit with a given country by how much the U.S. imports from it and then doing a rough adjustment. Because Lesothơ's ppl are too poor to afford most U.S. exports, while the U.S. imports $237 million in diamonds and other goods from the nation, they have reserved the highest- possible tariff rate for one of the world's poorest places. The idea that taxing Lesotho gemstones is necessary for the U.S. to add steel jobs in Ohio is absurd 1

This explanation seems horrific but sound. 10%tariffs if your balance of trade is roughly equal. It’s a shakedown & a protection racket. He’ll lift them by domestic sector and even maybe individual companies, as well as perhaps the occasional nation, as a reward for pledges of blind allegiance.
A description of the bogus calculations behind Trump’s claim that his obscene tariffs are somehow ‘reciprocal’.

One of the biggest corporate donors to the populist Reform U.K. party has sold almost $2 million worth of transmitters, cockpit equipment, antennas and other sensitive technology to a major supplier of Moscow’s blacklisted state weapons agency, documents show. From 2023 to 2024, the company, part of the British aerospace manufacturer H.R. Smith Group, shipped the equipment to an Indian firm that is the biggest trading partner of the Russian arms agency, Rosoboronexport. H.R. Smith Group donated 100,000 pounds (just under $130,000) to Reform U.K. last year, two days after Nigel Farage was announced as the party’s leader. The company is run by Richard Smith, a businessman who owns 55 Tufton Street, a Westminster townhouse that is home to some of Britain’s most influential right-wing lobbying and research groups.
